Is There Any Bad Side Affects To Having An Induction Kit?

hi there guys, i have a toyota corolla 1.4 vvti 2002 (e12)

i am just wondering if there is any bad side affects if an induction kit is put on my car. e.g. breather problems, too much air... etc... also is it worth it buying one for a 1.4??? i have a tte back on my car and thats the only tuning/performance mod.

the reason i am asking the TOPIC TITLE, is that on my mk4 golf when i put an induction kit my car would just cut out some times when i am at the lights, so i then put it bk 2 normal and it was fine. i think it was due to the breather pipe.

any advice would be helpful. thanks :D

Generally, having an induction kit without a heatshield will see you lose performance due to heat soak but a properly positioned and shielded kit will help with your engines breathing. In a NA setup, especially in a car such as yours, you will see minimal gains if any as the new volume of air to the compression ratio will be very minimal. If anything you will just gain a bit of noise and make your engine bay a bit more pleasing to look at. Hope this helps.

Its worth getting a SRI (Short Ram Intake) as the other guy said before it looks good and it can make the engine sound much better too.

It will also increase the throttle respons considerably, so they're definitly worth getting for that little bit of extra power!

again as everyone has mentioned, it is a small modification and a common one to do. Get a heatshield to close the hot air getting into the inductino and maybe put in a new cold air feed. there will be minimal gains but its really for the sound.

as everyone has said on a 1.4 is mainly for sound. dont expect much gain but your acceleration will feel quicker on 1st and 2nd gear i.e. your throttle response will be better.

the only other side effects are the lone-term ones where the wear-and-tear effect is quickened cos you tend to accelerate harder with an induction kit installed.

also the KN are oil based filters so be sure to clean them regurarly or there will be an oil buildup which may feeback into the engine instead of clean air again causing problems in the long-run...trust me i speak from experience lol

which is why a paper/maintainence free intake is better such as the apexi

i quite like the sound of that. do you have that on your car? if so any pix?

i have found a heat sheild on eBay and as for the cold air feed do u mean like a silver pipe that goes by the bottom fog lights?

I did!

My Esure listed it as "A non performance enhancing modification" ;)

the cold air feed is indeed the pipe leading from the fog light area grill to the air intake directly. you could possibly make one yourself is very simple...just get like a hoover pipe if you have a spare lying around and connect it up so that it positions from the bottom leading to the top. i havent done this my self but i know alot of ppl who have done this...hoover pipe isnt the best cos a steel or metal pipe will be better but it does the job lol

cheers guys, i have seen the silver pipes in a shop for about £2-4, do you need to connect it to anything? or jus put it by the air filter? thanks :D

well you will need to fasten them with cable ties or brackets in order to hold the pipe in place.

one end should be near the front grill at the bottom and the top end should be directly facing the air intake.

it may require some fiddling around to get the pipe fastened into the exact position.

or if you want a pipe already made in the right shape and made to sit in the right position then is best to buy the K&N pipes they probably come with some sort of fitting instructions.
