Raspy Noise

My Yaris is 2 years old in March. It's a 1.3 petrol.

Just after I change gear (from 2nd onwards) and increse speed I hear a rasping noise. Sounds like the exhaust but when I had it serviced last March, the dealer said there's nothing wrong with it and all Yaris' make that sound but I dont believe them.

Is this normal and if not what could be causing the problem?

Cheers all

Hi Krissy,

Sounds like it could be the cat heat sheild or manifold heat sheild rattling a bit.

Then again, my SR makes a similar noise when accelerating through the box but on mine it's coming from the dash somewhere.

Have someone different check it underneath for both sheilds, even if they don't feel loose they can move a bit and cause a rattly noise under throttle.

I had this problem on a Golf Gti i used to own and more recently on my Honda Accord.

In both cases i just removed the sheilds and they were both fine.

If you don't know anyone who can check it for you, or if you can't do it yourself then try taking it to kwik-fit or ATS and ask them politely to lift it up and give it a check over. They will probably do this for free....If you are cheeky enough to ask!! :D

Good luck. ;)

Another possibility is the Air cleaner housing - see my post under 1.3 Engine knocking. A rough and ready check is to put some Gaffa tape round the two push fit joints (Air filter end, the other at the nearside wing end) on the air cleaner intake housing. If this reduces the noise than apply the more permanent fix as per my post. Good luck!
