Slip Slide Away...

Hi all,

I have a Celica Gen 7 GT, and in the current snowy weather been having "fun" sliding about the place.

Anyhow the question is, is it normal for my celica (which as 17" wheels with P Zero tyres and the TTE springs) to be a more bit slippy than other cars?

Just doing 20 MPH and came up to a chicane (so you have to yield to oncoming traffic) put the brakes on and not much happened other than the ABS going mad. I had to press as hard as I could and barely stopped before reaching the yield point. This was easily 4 car lengths. However the car behind me had no such problems!

I have noticed in greasy weather and the wet I experience similar behaviour. Is it due to the width of the tires perhaps? (they are at correct pressure too btw).

Thanks

when it comes to this weather its all about tyres. and from what ive experienced withn gen 7s the abs seems to kick in a lil earlyer than it needs to. but if you want some expert advice you can go to any tyre wholesaler find the crusty old bloke with more knowlage than humanly possible. hell be able to bore you for hours about aspect ratios, and compound densitys. but in the end hell give you some good info.

yeah I have noticed this problem also with my gen 7

it is weird becuase my girlfriend has a fiesta which is amazing in this weather she is bombing about in it to no detriment.

I thought my celica would have the upper hand in this weather but, obviously not

I experieced the exact same thing today.. my ABS keeps locking and ive been so close to hitting something!

Does pumping the brake help the ABS unlock? I did it a few times and it didnt seem to do anything.. luckily last resort was handbrake which allowed me to stop.....

I've the same as you mate, I put it down to the stiff suspension and broad wheels, not very good in greesy conditions, I wouldn't say its completly down to the tires like some peoples sugesting.

well i have near to full tire thread of Toyo T1 R at 30psi (down from 32) and it still is pretty rubbish.... just need to engine break a little more now.

A guy at work also has the same problem on another make of car... I put it down to the wide wheels which tend to aquaplane more easily and apparently can get compacted with snow easier. Plus been wider they are less likely to "cut" down through anything like bike tires on other cars.

The stiff suspension and big rims (17") probably play a part in it to.

May try the handbrake thing as a last resort, but not on a corner or anything ;)

If you watch rallying in snow, you will see that the tyre/wheel combination is very narrow. Wide tyres tend to sit on top of snow, that's why the likes of a Fiesta will cope much better. Wide wheels are great in dry or even wet, but for snow....forget it! :o

also i think it has a lot to do with the weight.

My Audi has standard Michalin piolot sport tyres... 255/35 (i think)/19 and it grips much better.

Yesterday i lowered my tires to 26psi, and now it handles much better, but i will need to remember to reinflate them soon, as the ride is much harsher!
