Sump Plug Bolt And Washer?

This will be my first oil change since I've owned the car and I'm just gathering some info. Can any one tell me what type of sump plug bolt is on the Auris. Is it a standard 19mm Hex bolt or, like my Astra, a torque(star) bolt.

Also does the sump plug washer need to be changed every time you do an oil change. Is it a copper washer or a rubber 'O' - ring type.

I just thought I'd ask here before I have to get under the car. Make sure I'm prepared. Hate having to stop half way through to source the correct tool or washer type.

Thanks in advance....... ;)

It is a 19mm hex bolt that can be undone with a ring spanner or socket set. The washer is fibre and should ALWAYS be changed

Thanks Parts-King

why don't you get it done by Toyota dealer? Is it out of warranty?

I've always liked to do my own servicing. Something satisfying about putting in nice clean oil. Strange i know!!

not that strange..I like it too :D but if the car has warranty it is better to leave it for dealer. If soemthing goes wrong they may argue that it is due to wrong oil/ exceeded change time etc.

Sorry Kingo.....all Toyotas are 14mm hex sump plugs :P

But totally correct about the washer, change it everytime and dont overtighten the bolts as you can crack the washer which will cause a slight leak.

Are you just doing an oil change or are you planning on changeing the filter element too?

No i'll do the oil filter as well. I'll probably have to get an oil strap/wrench from Halfords to make my life easier though. Mind you haven't tried locating the oil filter just yet, so I dont know if I can get in there with just my hands.

The filter is on the drivers side of the engine underneath. There will be a plastic cover you can fold back to access it.

You will never be able to remove the filter housing with just your hands. The new diesels use a filter element which sits inside a metal case/housing.

And when refitting the housing/filter etc make sure you renew the seals (will be provided inside filter box if gen toyota parts)

If you catch or nick the seal you will get a good old oil leak so take your time.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it is the same set up as my Astra. When I get 5 mins I'll have a nose and see where it is.
