Engine Won't Tick Over

Hi, can anyone offer any advice?

I have a 06 Rav4 diesel XT5, bought three weeks ago to the day. I tried to start it tonight after finishing work, but it wouldn't start so after many attempts I called for breakdown assistance. When he arrived he started it straight away! Typical!

He tried it again and again, and it started every time except once. When the engine was running it was ticking over fine, so I drived it home, no problems.

When I got home, I tried to start it again, and it wouldn't start. When it did start, when I pressed the throttle it was fine, but as soon as it was left to tick over the engine cut out, time after time.

I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow but wondered if this has happened to anyone else, or if they know what the problem might be?

Thanks

Apart from the snag you have bought a nice car. I tend to be a bit wary when a new owner comes on with a snag in case that was the reason it was sold.

I don't remember anyone else commenting about this in the past. The idle speed is pretty well in the hands of the engine control unit - no adjustments possible. I'm not sure that the obvious things like the fuel filter or air filter could have an affect because ti would run pretty bad if they were blocked enough to stop it idling.

I think you have to wait until the dealer has looked but you could ask if it has a warranty history as it will be logged on their computer.

Please keep us informed.

Welcome to the club and even if you get it fixed be sure to keep in touch with us.

just a wee aside, but I only ever buy premium fuel for my RAV. I guess you can get hold of the better diesel oily stuff so keep clear of the muck they sell from supermarkets and only landrovers run on red diesel.

best of luck in sorting the problem out. As I say to many others, always confirm in writing to your garage what you say verbally to them. Just in case things need to be taken further. So if you complain about a fault, write it down and get them to sign a copy to say they received it. It keeps things clear for everyone.

I had the exact problem with mine a few months back. I took it to Minories Durham and they reprogrammed the ECU, I believe there has been an update of late and this cured the problem.

Hope you get it sorted!

Got my rav back from minories durham tonight...they reprogrammed the ECU, and also cleaned out the EGR valve as it was totally blocked apparently. While it was in they skimmed the front brake discs and refaced the pads as the discs were corroded. Was quite impressed that they did that actually as I didn't think that they would even look at anything else or that it would be under warranty but it was, so no extra cost thankfully.

Hopefully there'll be no more problems with it!

On a side point, can anyone tell me how to programme/operate the bluetooth on the steering wheel. I can't find it in the manual and can't figure it out myself.

Thanks!

Can you tell us which phone you are using? Before you "pair" it with the car it would be best to update the phone firmware. I take it the XT5 has full screen satnav, much the same as the 2008 model. If this is the case you have to turn on the bluetooth on the phone, go into phone settings on the audio unit in the car and generate a 4 figure code which you then put into the phone. Often the biggest problem is finding the right place in the phone menu system.

As a first step though, let us know which phone you are using and which network you connect to. Don't worry - I had much the same problem and managed to sort it with a bit of help from this forum.

Hi Fella,

In a previous post on this subject :

"Decided, without a great deal of confidence, to try my luck with the mobile phone connection this morning. It's a Nokia and it wouldn't connect. Went down to the Carphone Whorehouse armed with the Toyota Owners Manual and the knowledge gained from reading the forum. Explained the problem and asked to try some of their phones in the car. The Sony Erricson K800i worked fine straight out of the box - no supprises so far. Told the assistant I was currently with Orange. She informed me that I could have the same phone £10 cheaper if it was branded as Orange. She got one out and spent a fruitless half hour trying to get it to talk to the car kit. She then went to speak to the engineer who said it was likely to be a software issue AS THE SOFTWARE LOADED INTO A BRANDED PHONE WAS CONSIDERABLY DIFFERENT TO THAT LOADED INTO THE GENERIC VARIANT. He thought that one of the reasons that branded phones were cheaper was the cut down version of the manufacturer's software probably a reduced licence fee arrangement. The generic version of the phone was then reconnected without problem.

Not sure what the moral of this is but we can hardly lay the blame for the problem on Mr T if he not only has to test the manufacturers software on his in-car system but all the variants developed by the different service providers worldwide. The same problem sometimes occurs in the software industry when programmers don't stick to standards - usually ends up with Microsoft getting it in the kneck for that. It's hardly supprising that Mr T hasn't got a list of compatible phones though.

Maybe the first thing to try if you have connection problems is getting the phone unlocked and the generic software loaded? It's not so easy if you use a company mobile though."

I tried the phone in the car and at first it recognised the hands free and it gave me the 4-digits to put into the phone but then it lost the connection and now i can't get it back...strange how it worked the first time tho.

If I get the phone unlocked, who would be able to load the generic software, or can i get it off the internet??

The Sony Erricson web site if very good - download it onto your PC along with the management software and update your phone. The Latest version of the management software, Sony Erricson PC Suite, is 4.006.00 and it is excellent. You can edit your address/phone book on the phone from the PC.
