Hi all,

A friend of a friend of a friend of a... you get the picture; has a 3s-gte i can buy off them. It doesn't have the turbo or exhaust manifold though. Does that just make it a 3s-ge?????

What are the differences between the two engines (despite the turbo)?

stronger pistons, lower compression ratio, oil squirters to cool underside of pistons, different cams inlet system etc.

a second hand turbo will cost about £150 for a good unit and an exhaust manifold is about £130 new from toyota. is the engine the rev 2 or the rev 3 (did it come from a gen 5 celica or a gen 6 like yours?

also how much is he asking for it and is it in good order?

for a conversion you will need the ecu as well as maybe some wiring mods. also an mr2 gearbox and drive shafts are a good idea for reliability.

Ah, i see. Not sure on what year it was made. From my understanding there were four 3s-gtes: Rev 1 86-89 (pretty sure it wont be that), Rev 2 90-94, Rev 3 94-99, Rev 4 97-03 (st215) 03-07 (st246). I've emailed the question and waiting a response, will keep you posted.

Not sure on price either yet. What do you reckon would be fair?

Also... how can i be sure its a 3s-gte rev 3 (as thats the one i'm after)?

Wont be converting my GT as i'm happy with that :D. Just want to learn this engine so am thinking of buying it, taking it apart and putting it back together as a little project to keep me busy for a week or three :).

inlet manifold and cam cover are the easiest way to tell. the rev 1+2 also have a silver/grey timing belt cover but the rev3 is black, also the oil filter is on the bottom near the sump but on the rev2 its near where the turbo sits. this pic is a rev 1+2
