My gearbox has been acting up the last couple of weeks. Its became very difficult to change gears; I now have a pulled muscle in my arm cos of it (don't ask)... and any time I go to reserve; its hard enough trying to get it into gear; but even if the car has warmed up and has been out of gear for a bit; I have to do the "IF YOU CANT FIND IT GRIND IT" noise... and its pretty damn annoying...

Is this a f**ked gear box or just a case of ...... a f**ked gearbox.

Hi There.

VERY unlikely to be the actual gearbox.

They rarely go wrong these days.

Much more likely to be......

Selection cables out of adjustment or......

More likely......

Clutch not releasing because its out of adjustment or the release bearing is buggered.

Neither will be cheap, but nothing compared to a gearbox.

Probably new clutch & adjustment. Still under warranty ?

My guess would be the clutch not releasing too.

Could also be the selector cable, but clutch is much more likely...

At the risk of being flamed (again) I maintain that these cars aren't really Toyotas. They have a Daihatsu designed engine and gearbox (sorted by Toyota) and the rest of the mechanical bits must have had a substantial design input from Citroen and Peugeot (I would be willing to bet that Citroen did the door seals :>))

Having said that, I still like mine and enjoy driving it. I've just got reservations about it's long term reliability.

No flaming from me and I think you are spot on, TVOR did a good post summing it up on the IQ thread. Too many early problems affecting too many young cars and you have to wonder if the cost cutting has gone too far. If this car had been built in Japan I doubt we would have seen so much stuff going on. My Japan built Yaris was in a different league.

God knows what the Toyota Zung will be like in 2015, presumably it will be made out of cardboard and milk bottle tops....
