Dead Car, Please Help, Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeese :(

hi all, on the last straw here.

mates celica, real bad air leak, cat smelt like rotten eggs and smelt like it was glowing red.

engine management light came on for about 2 seconds, spluttered and died.

now

if i turn the key to the on position, the temerature gauage goes striaght to high, and there will be no responce from the engine, i.e no attempt to fire when you try starting it.

if I have the key in the on position, disconnect the Battery, wait 10 seconds, connect the Battery and have my mate rapping the brake pedal, turn the ignition off, then back on again, some times the temp needle goes to high, and some times acts normally (i.e stays at cold).

if the temp stays at cold, this means that it might attempt to start turning it on the starter, its almost running on the starter, but splutters, back fires, and throws it off the starter, making the starter grind.

then you have to Battery off and try getting the ignition right again so you know you have a spark.

I knew i had a spark, so i attempted to tow start it, but it only coughed and spluttered for a couple senconds then dies again.

the original reason for the cat running super hot has been addressed (air leak)

Any ideas?

so far, changed the ecu, the dizzy, coil, the eids thinky on top of the coil, and removed any after market alarms.

no error codes crossing the t's and c's

sounds like a lack of fuel. check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. could be as simple as a blocked fuel filter. also check for broken and damaged wires at important parts like dizzzy, injectors, map sensor etc.

where was the air leak? it is possible that it was something else. also check all engine earths these can cause bad running if connections are corroded or broken

when you crack the banjo at the fuel rail there is lots of pressure, but enough pressure,,unsure.

4 wires into the dizzy, all 9.6v, 11.9 v at the pos to the coil, 9.6v while cranking.

as to earths, well, most are resisted, i.e not 12v, so how do you tell what is the correct voltage at each earth?

but its the temp guage going straight to high that i'm focusing on as part of the fault finding..

well main earth strap is fine, other wise the engine wouldnt turn over.

The top of the inlet mainfold was removed to gain access to the injector rail to change a leaking O ring, one of the main bolts snapped off, and this is what was initially causeing the oil leak.

cant see any little earth wire that might have been disconnected.....can you think of any?

there are two IIRC that are part of the ecu ground system, the allow the ecu to acuratley know the voltage at the main sensors, look all over the inlet manifold as that is the ground point.

i wasnt refering to the main Battery ground.

was the o ring that was changed an injector seal? if so are you sure it hasnt trapped and leaking fuel into the inlet? also check that all vac lines have been replaced in the corrct locations, if the map sensor hasnt got a signal it will run badly or not at all.

Yup injector O ring

When it was running, after the O ring had been done, but with the air leak, it was running on 4, so doesn't seam like there is an injector leak into the manifold.

all vacuum lines have been replaced as they came off.

Unfortunatly before it came to me the head gasket had been done, and there are bolts missing every where, the cam belt covers are missing, and there are relays hanging off vacuum pipes etc.

but, as I say, all was running before it came to me with the leak, and drove away from here, all be it with the air leak we were going to sort out the next day.

When we sorted the air leak out, we had to have the manifold off again, and we carefull checked every thing and can't see any wires that might have been crimped, stretched, or left disconnected.

I'm 1 step away from either breaking a perfectly good car, or megasquirting it.

neither i want to do.

  • 1 month later...

well, update, it's now on zx9r carbs, that I fitted like a Vmax, so each cylinder can breath through 2 carbs, I then fitted a cooper s Mini dizzy by swapping for the end of the celica dizzy, its currently got a set of points in there, but I have just found a luminition kit on egay, so that will be going in there shortly.

I had an electrical problem, so I fixed it with a hammer :)

just a thought maybe not applicable or you have already been their

It couldnt be the cat is made up could it

son had similar problem with cat smelling & getting hot

the cat was choked solid not allowing exhaust gas to escape

sometimes the car would start / run for a while

others it just choughed and stopped

removed cat and car run fine

Running fine now on the carbs and points, I've lost the rev counter, but everything else is still working, I'm gonna take the cat off tomorrow as I dont need that restriction in the system anymore, but no, the cat isnt blocked.
