Silly Diff Lock Question

On the 4.1 there is a diff situated between the front and rear axles. The purpose is to stop the front and rear axles fighting against each other when negotiating curves but the disadvantage is that if any wheel gets on to soft ground all of the drive can be transmitted to that wheel and the vehicle is stuck. By locking the centre diff it is possible to transmit 50:50 to both axles. It still isn't perfect because you can still have 2 wheels spinning (one front and one rear) but you have a much better fighting chance.

To operate the diff lock you press the button on the dash which opens an electro pneumatic valve and applies engine vacuum to a piston. When you switch it off the vacuum is exhausted and the piston returns to the off position. Because the mechanism can stay engaged due to bind up (like trying to push the gearstick into neutral from in gear without pressing the clutch), a buzzer will sound until the selector is right back in the disengaged position. If it fails to stop buzzing then you have to stop and rock the car back and forth just to take the load of the gears and the diff lock will pop out.

If you have a 4.2 then it is permanent 4WD with no centre diff lock but the early ones have a limited slip rear diff as we concluded recently. It seems to have disappeared from the spec of the later 4.2s
