I have driven 4x4 for a long time and now going to venture into the world of cars (cheaper to run) and Toyota have a great reputation for thenselves. I am looking to purchase the above Toyota Avensis Estate this week. It has a full Toyota service history and slightly high mileage. While I am good at looking and sorting 4x4's any advice of what to look for before buying would be greatly appreciated. I am new to this forum as I thought I would do some research before buying and having read quite a bit I thought I should just come out and ask forsome advice. Thanks in advance for any advice given and it will be greatly appreciated :)

Hi there, check out the VOSA website for factory recalls on this model and make sure they have been completed.

Also check the spare wheel well as i know avensis's sometimes leak in this area and cause misting in the rear of the car, and also check the headlights for misting if there is any present insit on new headlights as this is a known fault.

hope these points are helpful.(generally the avensis is an outstanding car.)

To kenny1000,

I personally would be inclined to go for T3s or T3x, T2 very basic but still a very good car. You don't say Petrol/Diesel, either way i would not be too worried about milage especially with Diesel engine, it is an absolute mile muncher particulary if well looked after. I would have a really good look around if you have not already, the market is a wash with these cars. And don't pay over the odds on price just because it's from main dealer, you can absolutely guarantee whoever traded it in got a poor offer on car. It's a buyers market & dealer will be only to glad to move car on. Good to have full T/S/H but remember you have a lot of cars for sale with T/S/H.

I have a 2003 Avensis which so far has been very reliable, just the odd wear & tear items, anti/roll/bar links, a/r/b bushes, discs/ pads & tyres. I guess i have been very lucky. Just one other thing dipped beams are next to useless, check through service history to see if headlamps have been renewed due to warranty recall.

Regards, Beagh.

PS: 1.8 Ltr vvti engine if you are very unlucky has an oil consumption problem, but this a very very small batch of engines & don't let that put you off buying

one. Personally i would go for the 2 Ltr petrol engine.

To kenny1000,

Just to verify last posting if petrol i would go for 2 litre & if diesel i would tend to avoid the 2.2 litre model as a lot of people seem to have fuel consumption concerns with this engine. Seems to be an on going thread on forum, at the same time i know of many 2.2 diesel owners who swear by them. Just something to be wary of. Also you could try "Honest John & Autocar" websites for a more precise view.

Regards, Beagh.

When you say high mileage how high do you mean somewhere along 100K??? I wouldnt worry too much about the mileage like what Beagh1958 said the diesel engines are very good strong engines an can go for 200K if well looked after. Why do you think most taxi drivers go for them and where i live in Birmingham neally every taxi i see is an Avensis!!!

Thanks for all the advice. Just parted with £4000 for a 2.0 Diesel estate with 94000 miles on the clock on 55 plate. Returning roughly 45 mpg round town and 55 mpg on motorway. It was a lease hire with full service history and runs sweet as a nut. Pleased with my buy and hope it last a long as my Mitsubishi. Thanks again all :yahoo:
