Cam Tensioner

hi im brand new to celicas but they are amazing cars ive just bought my first oneand its mint! being poor ive bought a non runner and i have an issue.

cam belts snapped and ive almost finished changing it

but the tensioner doesnt make sense (does it auto adjust???), its a twin cam 3sge 1989 so gen1 i think, the tensionor has no was of adjusting , there is no spring and the centre bolt on the wheel doesnt adjust either

its bizarre ive searched the internet and can find nothing the same, similar, but not the same, there seems to be 2 standard types of adjuster and mine does not match either, am i missing a trick? has something snapped offff???

the body of the tensioner seems undamaged and i cant find anything that would hold a spring on the engine casing nor on the tensioner body

And to really rain on my parade ( ive been lay on the floor of my garden for 3 days trying to figure this out) the belt will not fit and toyota have assured me its the right belt, i assume the tensioner is at its most unadjusted right now as it moves freely for around an inch up and down but not enough to get the belt on.

ive got a feeling this is something really obvious and simple but im not a great mechanic so any advice or ideas would be very much appreciated

thanks

Si

Alright mate, ok firstly try find out exactly what model your celica is, from what you have put im guessing it is a celica st182 gti which is a gen 5. I had a look on www.fensport.co.uk and they have a hydraulic tensioner for your car which im pretty sure is the part you need. Put the belt on all lined up and once the tensioner is on you should then pull the pin on it and the belt should tension up nicely.

On fensport just go to parts, click on your car model and then go to servicing parts its under there about 49 quid i think.

You mean the hyd tensioner i was on about? it cant be that solid i cant even suggest anything except pliers (obviously) or wirelocking pliers may be better if you have some.

i havent been able to move it 1mm with a screwdriver an extension bar, it must be broke, i read it should compress with 19 nm of force

hang on i take it you havent got a new one? think you are supposed to get a new one where the piston which you are trying to compress is held back by a metal pin then you pull the pin out when it is all lined up. I have never done it the way you are trying to do it although i do know it is possible to do but from what you are saying it does sound knackered anyway.

yeah your way seems to make a lot more sense!

www.tcbparts.co.uk may have one if u want a new one they are usually a touch cheaper than fensport
