was driving home tonight round a tight corner was in 3rd gear doing 20mph, roads was wet with grit on it but still the ABS decided to kick in  everytime it does i feel like i have no control of the car. and the last time it happened i managed to crash into a tree and write it off. Im sure in other cars i havent felt this lack of control. Also when the ABS does kick in, it doesnt even feel like the breaks r working cos the foot doesnt seem to go far down on the pedal! please sumone help me solve (my problem) which is to understand the ABS system of the car? why is it supposed to be useful if u still crash? lol

ABS will only kick in when you are braking and you will feel a juddering through the brake pedal when that happens, it won't happen if you are going around a tight corner at 20mph because you should not even be touching the brakes then, you should have braked before and then steered in on a neutral throttle.

You said "Last time it happened I crashed into a tree". What nonsense is that ? Nobody crashed into a tree because the anti lock brakes were working properly.

ABS is only *****e if you are on deep snow or if you are a driving God and can modulate the brake pedal better than electronics so to keep the car at the very point of lock up. For people crashing into trees or Clio's I suggest it is more driver error than the ABS causing the problem.

ABS cannot defeat the laws of physics if you have misjudged the situation. It should allow you to steer round objects as well. If you run into something the brakes are probably the last thing to blame .....

But what did you do when the abs kicked in? What you should do is keep your foot hard on the pedal and steer where you want to go.

It might feel odd, but it is meant to help you keep control of the direction the car is going in.

Driver error... :censor: and it appears you didn’t learn from your previous experience when you managed to crash into a tree :help:

You don’t brake on corners!

You accelerate or maintain power to drive through the bend, you were going too fast for the road conditions, too fast for the cars performance/ability (grip, steering suspension etc)

Brake – Brake – Accelerate

Posted

igo-ugo - get yourself down to the next meeting of your local IAM group - they aren't all steering wheel shufflers. They will teach you how to drive properly for the conditions. If you brake in a corner you are approaching the corner at too high a speed.

Your starter for ten "Can My Safety Be Given Away" - Course Mirror Signal (if requried) Brake Gear Accelerate.

ABS does not necessarily reduce stopping distances.

now

and thats a statement in the aygo as if you press the brakes in an emergency the car goes faster than slows down! now i solved my problem with the happy abs on the aygo as i pulled the sensors a lil bit out and the abs only kicks in at the last needed moment

well it was very icy, and im sure ppl say ur meant to steer into the turn if ur sliding on ice, but instinct tells u to brake hard so thats wat i did till i spun the car, went up an embankment and hit a tree haha. not sure i dealt with it properly lol

all it was guys was misjudgement on my part, the road was icy, ive driven on ice before and i was barely going too fast for the corner maybe 30-40mph! wasnt even a big corner more of a slight curve in the road! suppose its like when u hit black ice, doesnt matter how fast or slow u go, if ur gonna hit it, then u hit it (whether ur on straight road or corner). its how i dealt with it that made me wonder...yes i was thinking bout going on a course for driving in the snow, cos im not exactly prepared when it comes to snow cos england doesnt get too much lol. personally i just never felt the benefit of having the ABS if when i touch the pedal at 20mph it kicks in! yes fair enuff i shudnt hav been braking at that speed round a bend but im nervous of slight bends and corners after my crash!! :(

yes i was thinking bout going on a course for driving in the snow,

Here

Wow I sounded a bit harsh there .. my amazement and the bottles of beer got the better of me. Sorry mate. We all have to learn.

When driving in snow and ice the best thing to know is always cover the handbrake. The handbrake will stop you understeering off the road and will get you 90 degrees to the direction of travel if you are sliding on with the ABS ineffectual and a lorry about to take out your side. It's a play between the throttle which will make you go wide and the handbrake which will tighten your line. You could do the same with the brake pedal but unless you are adept at heel and toeing or left foot brake Finnish rally style then best to keep things simple. Note using the handbrake to correct the front sliding should only be done at low speed, if you do it at higher speed you have to be very quick with opposite lock and throttle because our little Aygo's have a short wheelbase and low polar moment of intertia. Which means you will be facing the way you came with your mates Integra R about to hit you ..hee hee... oh those were the days in my Yaris...

Practice in a Tesco's car park until you can do a Scandinavian flick around the trolley bay.

One thing to watch in your local Tesco car park are the hidden kerbs they have a habit of adding to them to trick you and are nicely hidden by a little snow.

but im nervous of slight bends and corners after my crash!! :(

Being a nervous or hesitant driver is just as dangerous as the opposite... but you'll find that you'll learn from the errors you make and become more confident....

I've had a couple of fairly major accidents myself, neither of which were my fault, but it does leave you doubting your driving ability.

I dealt with it in very much a "get back out there and prove I'm not scared of anyone or anything" approach.... which worked for me. I'm quite a confident driver now and I trust my car and my driving ability immensely.... hopefully without being c ocky about it! Maybe as others have said, an Advanced Driving course will help you get over those nerves....

Stuff happens mate, it's how you deal with it and move onwards and upwards is the main thing!

when i say nervous i dont mean a complete nervous wreck. im just a bit too careful on the corners on the country roads now, even tho i kno them like the back of my hand!! when i drive anywhere else i drive like normal and i hate admitting i might have turned a little nervous since the accident. i wasnt even hurt in the accident but it really screwed me over 4 a while (financially and independance wise cos i had no car and no garantee of getting a car cos of bad credit) lol so i dont wanna have to go thru it again. even tho i got GAP now i still get scared of having that feeling of loss of control and not knowing how to over come it :) maybe a driving course wud be good. not for any other driving but just in those conditions! noone wants to have an accident, but until u do u dont really know how ur gonna react!! lol :) im fine tho not too bad a driver im getting used to the roads again now ;)
