Tuned Diesels And Dmf

Rather than add a reply to the sticky (that might not get noticed), I'll start a new thread.

I'm thinking about a 4.2 diesel as my wife has a 4.2 petrol and I really like it. I would consider chipping/tuningboxing/tweaking the diesel if I got one. I was wondering if the increased torque would have a detrimental effect on the DMF?

Plan B is to just wait a bit longer for a nice petrol one to appear for sale :)

The thing to do is fund out what bhp/torque the DMF was designed to handle. Then you can judge what effect extra torque may have.

The 4.1 transmission (petrol) takes up to 350bhp before complaining. I think the 4.2 transmission is pretty similar.

Can't comment on how strong the DMF is though....and its an expensive fix if you get it wrong.

I would worry about the dmf issue on early diesel Ravs, but not worry about the effects another 30 bhp would add or the increased torque, on the 4.3 the T180 engine + drivetrain handles 400nm of torque + can be tuned even further, The engine + drivetrain in the 140 rav is identical (as far as i understand) so i think we can safely say that toyota generally allow for a bit over + above..On a point if you are considering chipping your 4.2, budget for having it fitted, some of the supposedly plug + play ones on E bay are not quite as easy as they would like you to believe..

Thanks folks. Still undecided, there ain't many (petrol or diesel) about within a sensible distance. Not sure if I can be bothered getting a diesel and then chipping it to get similar performance to a petrol. I only do 4-,5000 miles a year so can't really justify a diesel. Plus, should I chip it or save for a new DMF?!?

With regards to fitting a chippy thing, I consider myself a master tinkerer :)
