D-4d Engine Knocking,sonds Rough.

Hi i think my engine has trouble 2004 2.0 D-4D 115k.Used it this morning superb no trouble went shopping parked it up came back to it tryed starting and engine sounded terrible eventually it did fire or should i say ticked over badly,with bad sounds from engine ,knocking and running very rough doesnt rev up.Only thing ive done which is probably a coincidence is change fuel filter but ran it no trouble 35 miles.Towed home from AA.No Codes in it .

The car fails really to start with bad sounds coming from the engine so dont want to keep cranking it,.Ive previosly had codes of P1251 coming up and going into limp mode but ran ok after no trouble.

Can anyone tell me would it be like this if the Turbo had gone??

Would the knocking +running rough be anything else other than serious Engine Trouble.

If it its Serious Engine trouble are we talking loads of money?i know it could be anything but it does sound bad to listen to!!

Hi Andy

It sounds a rather like injector problems. Your Toyota dealer can do a diagnostic check on them and tell you for sure, if it is the bad news is yes they are expensive.

This is Crazy - Went out to car for some reason later tonight and started up first time running as smooth as anything went for a run and you wouldnt think it was same car as earlier.I dont think then this is serious engine trouble then do you.

The car in the past has had odd problem every blue moon it didnt want to fire In my previous threads someone mentioned when the same car had to be turned over a few times to start that the solenoids on the pump would need changing.??

Also i think its a toss up between this and the turbo needing a good clean.Any ideas?

To andyhep,

I would not discount injectors, but you point out recent fuel filter change, any possibility of air leak as this would certainly give you the problems you describe ie: engine sounds like it is running on one or two cylinders at the most. You certainly will not want to remove your turbo, a pig of a job & not much to clean, you could remove intake side pipe & check for any movement from centre shaft. Your error code relates to air mixture problems. I would be inclined to concentrate on fuel filter fitment first before pulling things apart.

Regards, Beagh.

Hi thanks for reply i changed the filter , as it hadnt been changed by the looks for a long time and thought this was maybe causing the light to come on and odd starting difficulty.

What can really go wrong with the filter change 2 pipes i took off were put back on, i doo admit the spring clips arent the best, may change for jubilee clips,All rubber seals on and screwd tight filled with fuel and jobs a good one started no probs.We drove it 35 miles then all ok.

Then later on a shopping trip parked up and then re-started and this weird engine behavior as if engine was a gonner.I feared the worse but couldnt believe a D-4D thats had regular oil changed can give up like that.

What about Ecu needing software upgrade?? I dont know im just guessing but where apart from the 2 pipes could i get air leaks from filter if all screwd up tight with rubber seals.

Could the priming pump malfunction on the top and restrict fuel flow in anyway or air intake???

Hi ANDY

it looks strange in fact.

I conside the possible reasons, asf:

- glow plugs - to be checked all four;

- injectors (+ their control solenoids);

- HP inj pump solenoid valves;

- air inside of the rail/injection pump.

I do not believe that the turbocharges is faulty.

Just open the bonnet and start the engine -- have a look how's working. AFter use two fingers and touch each injection pipe that connects rail with injector. It must too have a pulsation in case the injector works fine.

The turbo can not be considered on idle rpm but only at load.

I do not like you to have DMF fault, but it always happens when you do not wait it.

Check the above several items firs -- it is my point of view.

Cheers/Igor

Thanks for reply igor , i didnt realise the injectors had control solenoids as well as the HP pump?

I struggle finding good diesel mechanics apart from taking it into main dealers and praying heavily.

This is so strange never has this happened before.

Could the dmf do this to a car ? make the engine sound as if its no oil in it!!

Andy

I feel the problem is close to you but you have to investigate step by step.

The DMF - is the last -- just start the engiine and hear area where the DMF is locacted.

May be the lack of a control signal for solenoids criates this issue. As you stated it has happened after nest starting.

the knocking sound is a BAD INJECTION.

It is cllear heard when the engine is idle runs.

Gone again - Hi there same has happened again car drove to destination and then when parked up refused to fire.Im now considering Toyota main dealer what do they charge an hour these days,do they charge for a plug in even tho no light on.

This is obviously an intermittant fault, ive left it where it stands and prey it starts again to get it back.

This is so strange.

Hi igor i went back to car later and it started first time and has started on my drive several times since.

The Scv valve you speak about if i take it in to a mechanics are they located on the fuel pump itself, as i maybe want to point him towards these to check them out??

yes they are exactly on the pump.

he'd to check with both. someone on th eforum types very similar issue and once both been changed - the problem was cured.

Hi are these the 2 scv you talked about on the pump.

Hi Andy

In case both are located on the injection pump then you are correct.

Good luck + up date us with developments.

Hi there for some strange reason im going totally different to views and i may be wrong but trying a new Starter motor.I dont know why but i have gut feeling this is the problem.I have read in other forums posted by goodison who seems to know his stuff about a same problem he diagnosed with the starter motor.

He says in previos post "your car has a faulty starter motor,replace it and the fault is cured,fault is caused by scratching on the armatuer shaft which causes a high resistance on the electrical circuitry, starter will be turning quite normal when you start warm, but the excess current draw shuts down the injectors hope this helps you "

I think this maybe true of mine and have new starter on order,if im wrong then its only a starter if im right im quids in from replacing scv valves .

This is a stab in the dark for me but goodison is a toyota technician and seems to know his stuff on toyota matters.

Will update you and ill be jumping for joy if im right, in my decision.
