HI, Has anyone got an Aygo with a Engine rattle when cold. Ours only seems to rattle at a certain outside temperature, Usually around freezing. The rattle does disappear after a few minutes when the engine has warmed up.

Been back to Mr T under warranty couple of times which they replaced the back section exhaust and now replaced the clutch, went to collect yesterday morning and lo and behold rattled when started.

We love the car but is beginning to grate a bit now, also sounds like a Tractor driving along until it warms up.

ANY IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The rattle is usually the camshaft followers hitting the cams until the oil gets to work. The good news is that Toyota think it is fine to use thinner 0W20 oil, which should alleviate this characteristic a bit. It's unlikely that your valve clearance needs adjusting. Interestingly, Toyota only suggest an aural inspection of the valve clearance, but citroen (the C1 uses the same engine) require a proper valve clearance check (with a feeler gauge) at 25,000 miles.

Maybe your Aygo was assembled on a friday afternoon?

Thanks for your reply, not sure if it is a camshaft follower rattle, forgot to mention that along with the rattle it also squeals a little. Have checked the belts and tensioners etc...

Mr T seems baffled but is putting its hand in its pocket!!!

The squeal could be premature clutch wear, which is a known issue with some cars. To rule out piston slap is a tricky job. It would be quicker to check the valve clearance.

My sister drove her car with almost no engine oil in it and the piston rings began to squeal
