Carina E Boot Trim Removal

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi All,

Just been given a Carina E 1.8 GLi which is great, except for a few minor issues.....

One issue is the rear wiper is stuck half way up the window. I have checked the fuse on the inside, near the steering column but that is ok. I can't see a fuse or relay in the engine compartment for the rear wiper. The front wipers are fine.

My next guess was to to test at the motor itself, to see if there is 12v. However, I can't get the trim off! Can someone tell me how it is held on? Clips? glue? Star-wars "force"? I sure can't see any screws. Anybody know?

I checked the Haynes manual (available from all good torrent sites ;)) and... you're out of luck. They say:

Step 3: Open the tailgate and remove the inner trim panel.

I like the way they feel they have to tell you to open the tailgate, but don't think it's necessary to tell you how to get the trim off... I can only assume it's just clipped in place, because they'd have told you if there were screws involved. Wouldn't they?

Hi Josh,

It's really stuck on there... the Haynes failed me this time!

Thanks for looking into it.

If anyone knows, I'd be greatful for their input.

Regards,

David.

If it helps any, Haynes also says this:

27 Interior trim panels - general information

Note: Take extra care when removing plastic clips from interior trim panels, as the clips and panels are easily damaged or broken.

Well, thanks, Haynes. Just to fill you with confidence, eh...

1. Most interior trim panels are secured by clips and/or screws; before attempting to remove a panel always inspect it closely to check where all fasteners are located and to decide on the correct approach for removal.

That's f'cking helpful, isn't it. Really helps you track down the problem.

Remember that if the panel is being removed for access to another component, it may only be necessary to lift one end of the panel.

And you'd never have thought of that without their help.

2. A wide variety of clip-types are used; hidden clips may be prised free, but some visible clips will require a different method. Some plastic clips require their centres to be depressed before withdrawal.

Great. So all that tells you is that you never quite know if you can pull safely or not :)

When prising free a panel secured by hidden clips, always wrap tape around the blade of the tool used to protect the paintwork.

It's that attention to detail again...

I hope some of that helps, but somehow I doubt it.

On a completely unrelated topic, did you know that one of the valid reasons for quoting copyrighted material is to parody something? ;)

Hi,

Thanks for all the info. It is indeed clipped on very well with clips that break lol.

I got into it in the end, but more brute force than engineering techniques.

The problem with wiper was that the back of the motor had popped out of it's housing. I just shoved it back in to position, true to form, it clipped back into place.

Thanks for the help.

Now for the problem with the cooling :)

David.
