Steering Bushes

Hey guys,

As you know, (from previous posts) I am still looking at buying a 51 plate 2 ltr gx 5dr.....

ok...well saturday i went to go for a test drive only to find the garage shut... :ffs:

luckily, the rav was outside on the ramps so it couldnt be nicked.....

however, while it was in the air, i took the opportunity to look at the underside & get an idea of any thing that might need doing....

all the bushes, the exhaust, hoses etc look ok....fairly new by all accounts....the only issue i could fine was the steering bushes...they have been marked up with yellow chalk...this would suggest either they are from a scrap yard (not the bushes themselves, but the "wishbone" as i would call it) & recently fitted, or they were noted as an advisory at the MOT back in august.

Until i can speak to someone at the garage, i wont know which is the case...

my qustion is (apologies for the ramblings) if they need replacing;

1.how much work is this?

2.is it a "diy" job?

3.does the subframe need dropping out to gain access?

4. is this a fairly common thing to do on ravs?

thanks all....

Drew

anchorman, thanks for this...but isn't this replacing the wishbone/suspension arm..? i think the bush i am talking about sits above the arms, not actually part of the arm itself..........not sure though.......

The suspension bushes need replacing after anything from 60,000 - 80,000 miles. Depends on the use etc. On a 51 plate, it could well have had the bushes done.

Got to go to work but will come back to you later. I can't quickly find the info on the suspension sub frame.

The anti roll bar sits above the wishbone, could it be the mounting bush in this?

If it isn't the bits that Kingo has pointed out try to elaborate a bit more or better still add a photo.

hi guys,....yeah it is the part kingo pointed out....however, there were a number of little faults with it so decided against it...

the main one was on the test drive, when we pulled upto a junction/roundabout/lights etc the engine would cut out....idle speed dropped too low....

when we got it back to the garage it was put on the diagnostics & it came up with an ECU fault according to the guy at the garage...he said it could be a simple re-map of the ecu but didnt want to risk spending the cash to find it had further faults etc......

so thanks for all your help....but the missus has now set her heart on a scenic.......not overly impressed but not much i can do as she will be the main driver of it,......
