New Keys

Hi Folks,

If I was to buy a 4.2 and only get one key fob with it could I go to a dealer and get two new fobs coded to the car and any old ones deactivated? Any old fobs would still physically unlock the car, but not be able to start it I suppose. What would be a likely cost for this?

Ta.

There are several threads about replacement keys - primarily because of the cost. You are probaby looking at £100+ per key [i had to pay around£80 for a basic ignition key for my daughters 2001 Yaris]

If you have not bought the car yet I would recommend you get the vendor to sort it [check any keys they get work] or negotiate on the price to allow for the cost of the keys.

Once the dealer has the keys it can take anything up to an hour to code them so make sure any price you agree to includes labhour.

Not sure about deactivating old keys.

Good luck

I don't see how old ones are "deactivated", surely keys are coded to the car, if you change the car coding then old keys will no longer electronically work (but they would presumably still work in the barrel of the lock even if as said they shouldn't actually start the car)?

I bought blanks from eBay for my 4.2 cost me £7.00 for two from china including postage. Then another £3.00 to have one cut. All you do is take the unit out of the old key on put it in the new one. No need to recode. However if you are looking at recoding completely then surely you would have to have the ecu recoded as well. Is it really that cost effective.

If you only got one key then ask where the second is. If they tell you it's lost then how come they never sorted that on the insurance. Wouldn't recoding b e covered as part of the insurance for lost or stolen keys?

If not and the car is subsequently nicked then let the police know where you got it from so they have a starting point. Howver I would venture to say it's highly unlikely that someoen would sell you the car and then steal it back or anything.

It might be more cost effective to fit an alternative alarm and imobiliser.

You should have the Grey key as this has the code tag with it. Used by dealers and others to re-code in some instances.....

Only one key sound suspicious.... ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

This one is pasted on the general forum -

Ok in this thread. They do refer to lost or stolen keys and a replacement key set.

Can anyone con firm if this would be covered on the insurance. Especially if it is known the keys were stolen. I personally would expect it to be.

If somebody broke into your house and stole the car keys, you will be covered on insurance, it happens all the time  That is about the only way of stealing your car these days

If you only have one key, then you hope it is a master key (Black headed) If it is a sub key (grey) then you are in trouble. You MUST have a Master key to programme in a new key, unless you go to the key specialists who can re-set your ECU and you start with a clean insatll as it were. Believe it or not, as a dealer we dont have the kit to do that

Kingo

Hi.

Just found this on tinternet, may be worth a try. You do though need one original key. as you have one if you can get another blank chipped key it may work.

Programmming a spare key:

To stop the process at any time, press on the foot-brake pedal 1 time.

1. Simultaneously press and release the foot-brake and accelerator pedals 1 time.

2. Insert existing master key into ignition. Leave the key in the OFF (LOCK) position.

3. Within 15 seconds of inserting the key, press and release the accelerator pedal 5 times.

4. Within 20 seconds, press and release the brake pedal 6 times and remove the key.

5. Within 10 seconds, insert the new key into the ignition.

6. Within 10 seconds, press and release the accelerator pedal 1 time.

7. After 80 seconds the new key is registered and the security light will go off.

8. Remove new key and press and release the foot-brake pedal 1 time.

9. The new key will now start the vehicle.

Cheers John

Hi Folks,

Just to clarify - this is just hypothetical, I've not actually bought a car with only one key. When I do go to buy one, I'll be making sure I get the grey master and the two black slaves like we got with my wife's one last year.

ps - waiting for a joke about 'slaves' :)
