Starting Problems And Engine Cuts Out When Driving!

Hi,

I've got problems with my 1997 Carina E GS at the moment. I've got a mobile mechanic coming to look at it soon, but I thought I'd seek the opinion and advice of others as well.

The signs of trouble appeared about a week or so ago. The car would start up fine, but about 10 minutes or so into a journey the engine would start revving when in neutral or idle. Alternatively the car felt as it the engine was about to cut out/stall. To prevent this I would have to press on the gas, again when in neutral or idle at lights for example.

About the same time when accelerating noticed a noise when pressing the gas. A sort of rattling sound, the car sounded just like a diesel engine. This would last for a few seconds or till I got up to speed.

Just so happened the car was due for a service. Mentioned the above problem to the mechanic who suggested adding some Injection Cleaner to a full tank.

On my way to Halfords the following day and noticed that the engine now started cutting out quite often at the lights. On my way back from Halfords and as I was slowing down to take a corner the engine died completely and all light lit up on the display. With the car cruising with the engine off I was able to restart the engine. When it was safe to do so, pull over further up the road and sure enough the engine died before I managed to stop. Decided to turn the car around and head for home. At one point the car refused to start and the engine warning light came on. Pushed the car to the side of the road, and fortunately it started up again.

Had a good read of the board and it appears that others have experienced similar symptoms. Could it be the injectors? It would be interesting to see what others think before I get it looked at.

Cheers.

Hi,

To me it sounds like it might be a problem with the fuelsystem or the ignition. Both systems do work together to get the engine working. You didn't mention wich engine you have in your car so it is difficult to answer more closer than this. You will get lot of questions from me to start with.

Did you get the faultcode when the engine warning light went on? That faultcode might tell you where to start looking.

When did you change the fuelfilter?

Do you have the right fuelpressure?

In what condition is the igniter on your ignitionsystem?

Is any wire loose on the ignitionsystem?
