Celica Gearbox Question - Any Help Greatly Appreciated =)

Hi all,

I have a 1994 6th Gen import Celica. Basically the gearstick is very hard to move, and it doesnt always go into gear when driving. I'm really just looking for clarification as to wether the gearbox has gone and needs replacing?

Some people I've asked said it could be a clutch problem, which I personally doubt, others have said it could be gearbox oil, which I have no idea how to check, and others have said the gearbox is dead and needs replacing.

If this is the case, does anybody know if a UK Celica gearbox would fit in an import Celica, and also how much something like that would cost to have done, or would I be better off selling the car?

I've recently spent just over £1000 on new parts for it, so it seems a shame to give up on it now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All the best - Dave.

Sounds like a thrust baring to me buddy. little piece inside the gearbox which pushed onto the clutch fingers ?? i dunno 100% about it but it does either sound clutch, or thrust baring.

Thanks very much for the reply. This problem has been going on for a while, my cars been sat in the garage since November because nobody really knows what's wrong with it. I hopefully will have a mechanic coming to look at it on Saturday so I'll pass on the message about the Thrust Baring, hopefully we'll be able to get to the bottom of it once and for all.

Thanks again :)

is it hard to move even in neutral? it could be the synco that is knackered! you also have a manual adjustment to the clutch inside the footwell but if you aint to machaniclly minded i would not bother mucking about with this

check the gear cable bushings at the gearbox selectors

they are rubber and can perish leading to hard gearchanges

there are bronze replacements avalilable from time to time on eBay

hello, the gearbox you need depends on what suspension you have on the car.

do you have standard suspension (normal gearbox) or superstrut suspension (gt4 gearbox)

hope this helps

I managed to get a replacement gearbox (I did need the 3S-FE). Although it still doesn't feel quite right. It sometimes has trouble going into 2nd and 4th, especially going down from 5th to 4th. I've been told this could be the linkage? Anyone experienced this before?

Many thanks.
