2004 Avensis D4d 2.0 (diesel) - Cam Belt Or Chain ? / Strange Milage Q

Just sold my v reg Avensis Estate which had been our family car for many years and have bought a 2004 D4d 2.0 Diesel Estate. Its my first diesel car and it is very tidy - lovely condition etc.

I was hoping someone might give me advice on two points-

1/Is the engine cam belt or chain?

2/I bought the car from a salvage yard as it is an ex-fleet car owned by a finance company (they are a reputable company who sell on seized/recovered cars etc) and it comes with full service history from main dealer showing 70k miles. When I saw the car it had sat in the compound for several months and had a flat Battery reqiuiring jump starting. When I looked at the odometer it showed 300 (three hundred) miles! This is definately NOT a trip clock (I realise you can cycle through two trip clocks by tapping the button) - this is definately the vehicle's milage display.

The seller can't explain this only suggesting that the milage are should reset over time and it is due to sitting with a flat Battery.

Other than this anomality there is NOTHING else to suggest anything sinister. My father in law (good knowlege of cars) and I spent a long time looking over it. The car is immaculate. No obvious signs of accident damage or excessive wear on the interior to indicate more than the 70k declared.

Has anybody any knowledge of this sort of thing happening to an electronic speedo and do you think it will correct itself - or is something I should be worried about?

Appreciate any helpful response.

Shaun.

To shaun1234,

Car has cambelt. Have never come across this speedo fault before, have changed many batteries on these vehicles & previous milage always shows again with new Battery. It is possible that you could have faulty speedo unit??????? But with respect you have hundreds off these cars for sale on the market, my inclination would be to walk away. SORRY TO LATE, my mistake you have already bought the car.

Godd Luck, Beagh.

PS: Cambelt to be changed at 60,000 miles. You can have your clock reset by authorised specialists & see if it stays at corrected milage, it would take 10 minutes at the most.
