No Drive In Fifth

There are lots of posts on the forum about problems with 5th gear, but none where drive has been lost.

When I go into fifth it is like going into neutral. There is also a loud rattling noise in 1st & 2nd.

Could this be case for replacing 5th gear or something else ?

If anybody has experienced this before, any help would be great

Thanks

You don't say what your RAV is I.E Model shape... Is it the older 4.1 shape, 4.2 Shape or the newer 4.3 shape.... also petrol or diesel.... The rattling in 1st and 2nd gear sounds similar to other problems....

Give us some more details on your model....(if unsure look HERE

If you or your garage know about gearboxes just take the cover of the end and the reason should be apparent. These boxes are easy to work on and 5th gear can usually be mended in situ.

The Vauxhalls are very similar in some ways. You can take a plate off the end of the five speed box and withdraw the mainshaft thus allowing you to drop the clutch without taking the box out.

Just tell him to take the cover off the box and he should be able to work the rest out. These photos show more - maybe you can print them for him.

Back with more news guys.

Mechanic had cover off gearbox yesterday & he says fifth gear looks fine.

Seems to think it is something wrong with spline ?

As he's never worked on these gearboxes before

he's gonna try to get a diagram of internal workings before attempting to strip it down.

Possibly some sort of toyota gearbox workshop manual.

Anybody got any ideas where I could get hold of anything that may help.

Cheers

Fifth gear normally sits on a splined part of the shaft. It may have worn to an extent that the gear is just spinning on the shaft which is where you lose the drive in fifth.

You can replace whatever has failed but if there is no drive in fifth the offending part is probably visible with that cover off the back of the box (if it is a splined shaft it may need the entire box stripped to get it out).

If you pm me with your email address I will send you some representative gearbox info for your mechanic.

My 97/98 Rav4 had that problem. At first the car would slip out of 5th gear and go into neutral, then gradually it worsened to the point I was driving 42miles a day to a from work on the M4 in 4th gear tops!

I ordered my parts from kingo on the forum here, I could probably dig out a list of what was ordered and used.

The local garage then fitted the bits by removal of gearbox end casing and using the rav4world article with the photos (http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8866).

Sorted.

If no one else gets back to you with diagrams, mail me as I can scan the copies I have (stored safe somewhere I hope!).

Hi There,

Just wondering if you could let me know how much this sort of problem costs to get fixed, as I think our RAV4 just devloped it tonight.

Many thanks in advance
