Hi all, i am getting confused with the whole wastegate thing, i am looking for big power and have just purchased a garrett 3071r, the person i bought it off said it has an internal wastegate, however it can be run with an external gate with the use of a t3 plate. does it make a difference that my turbo has an internal gate but usining it with an external, or should i buy a turbo that solely requires an external?

i would have thought the internal wastegate will be fine. Have you upgraded internals like pistons, reconditioned the head, hks head gasket etc? and have you got a mappable ecu?

i didnt think the internal gate could handle 450bhp? yeh forged the whole engine, got a 1.5mm steel gasket but it aint hks.

it doesn't need to be HKS, they tend to be made from the same stuff.

the wastegate doesn't handle power levels, it handles exhaust gasses. basically the more air you put into your engine (boost) the more exhaust gases are produced. once this reaches a certain level the internal wastegate won't be able to expell the gases quick enough resulting in more gases spining your turbo leading to boost creep. most people just opt to go straight for the external due to the eaise of upgrading it if it's not big enough.

I Have agreed to pay a boy £600 for a garrett 3071r which has covered less than 1k miles, i was just going to buy a t3 plate which would give me the external wastegate, does it require more upgrades than this?

not that i can think off, just close the internal wastegate with a wire(coat hangers are good for this ;) ) and use the external gate, job should be a good 'un.

apart from oil and water lines lol
