when cold rpm goes up to 1800-2000 when temp gauge start's going up rpm start's to fall slowly. when heated half way on the gauge engine goes back down to 750 when sationary but when driving temp well go back to cold and rpm is way back up to 1800.if driving 6 miles down the road will stop at light's etc and rpm is still racing up to 1800 if not moving for a couple of min's temp will rise and rpm will start going back down slowly but when driving temp will go to cold and if stoping same thing will happen again this has only started to happen from sep 08.

other day temp was 10dgre out side started car rpm started at 1800 and shot to 2000 then droped back to 1800 and shot back to 2200 after a couple of min's temp went up slowly car rpm started to drop slowly this has happened a couple of time's this week.

even in the cold i could be driving for 10-15 miles i know the engine should be hot but shows cold and rpm is still going at high rpm when stopping at lights etc i wounder if any one has had this problem befor. (engine 7fe? )

thanks for the repiles from the three members that wrote back but didn't give all this imfo.

hope someone can help have been to toyota dealer but turned round told me just cars age but other people have told me there most be something like a senser or something eles that can be fixed.

plz can someone help thank you

To hellhawk,

Sorry for missing original posting? Have come across similar problem in the past ( I take it Engine is 1.8 ltr ) have had faulty temp sensor switch causing same sort of problem. Also air leak around throttle body in another vehicle. Also you might check idle control valve, from memory i think Toyota call component by the same name, part of throttle body.

Regards, Beagh.

Sounds to me like the thermostat is stuck open, hence temperature dropping when driving down the road. Coolant is passing straight through to the radiator and cold wind coming through is cooling it back down, when the temp goes back down, the temp sensor treats it as a cold engine and applies enrichment and high revs (like choke).

The thermostat should keep coolant static in the cylinder block until up to temperature and then open to allow just enough flow to maintain a constant temperature. With thermostat stuck open it will warm up (albeit slower than normal)when stationary but will not maintain temperature when moving.

Get a new thermostat in it and I think your problem will disappear.
