Can anyone tell me which plug lead goes into which part of the distributor of my 1998 avensis. I gave a friend of mine a lend of my leads to help him out and cannot find the piece of paper I wrote it down on when I was trying to put them back on. The car is a 1.6 petrol, 4A-Fe engined. Appreciate any help any1 can give...

Don't know which is the number one position but the firing order will be 1 - 3 - 4 -2. Thats the standard 4 cylinder firing order, the only other alternative is 1 - 2 - 4 - 3 which as far as I know was only used by Ford.

If you can find out which is no.1, then follow direction of rotation of the distributor to place the other leads into position.

If you can't find out number 1 ......

Take spark plugs out, turn engine by hand (in direction of ratation) when no.1 piston comes to the top of its stroke, check the valves are both closed (if not they will be on the rock, one closing, one opening). If they are closed, no.1 is about to fire.

See which segment the rotor arm is pointing to, and that is number 1.

If the valves are on the rock, turn engine until no.1 comes back to the top of its stroke, then go to rotor arm.

Hope this makes sense to you.

Maybe someone will post a piccy of one, which will be easier for you.
