Auris Engine Noises

Dear All,

I have done 1200 miles in my SR180 now and there has been a weird noise that comes from the engine in 1st and 2nd gear when you give it a bit of beans. It sounds like the engine is <I thought I could get past the swearing filter - what a sad muppet I am eh?>ed to be honest, like a loud grinding / growling sound. I have also been very dissappointed with the power output of the car, there isnt a slap from the turbo that you usually get from a diesal and was wondering if there should be.

All in all the car is lovely to look at but i am not keen on the engine at all, very disappointed indeed.

Just done 2k in mine. Also notice it sounds like a bag of bolts as well sometimes, but reckon this is just the way

the engine is.

i agree about the power thing, i had an 07 Leon FR TDI 170 and it was rapid compared to the Auris, but you can really only boot the Auris is 3rd and 4th. 1st and 2nd gear are useless but i am considering one of the tuning boxes which takes it to 215bhp.

Andy, If you look in the tuning box thread you will see I have one on my SR 180, and the difference is night and day, 1st and 2nd are still a non event, but boot it from 1500 rpm in 3rd, 4th and 5th and experience what the car should have been like from the factory, it flys.

I came from a highly modified petrol Octy vRS, and going back to a diesel and the different driving styke was hard, but this mod brings you back to enjoyment.

Don't just think of getting one, just get one, and enjoy the car, if you get the one I did, then there are tuning options within the box to increase the power, torque even further, as I obtained the full details from the seller.

PM me if you want to know any more details etc about it.

If you could PM me the full details beretta that would be great. Do you find you can rev it a bit higher as well without it falling flat?

Does anyone know if theres a torque limiter on the first 2 gears like many cars have?

i cant tune mine cos its on contract hire and as such wud void the warantee, but yes 1st and 2nd gear do sound like a dry shoebox being kicked about with a rusty can inside but dont let u put this off cause the engine can take a beating, as its a toyota

I am thinking of going down the tuning box route.

In respect to the auris it does go like stink in 3rd, 4th and 5th but 1st and 2nd are pants. I have a Golf TSI next to me the other day and up to 2nd he pulled away then when i got the car into 3rd reeled him in and went past him.

I think also with respect to the speed thing, they feel like a big car and I think the car is quick, it just doesnt feel fast until your next to somethin.

Feels a lot faster with the box on.

Well due to massive torque modern diesels generate, many manufacturers limit the torque on first and second gear so the gearbox doesn't get crushed. As others have said diesel is all about mid-range acceleration.

Its not the torque being limited thats the problem, first and second on the SR180 need to be longer/higher ratio, the power/torque of the engine would pull longer ratios without any problem.

I have to agree. Especially 1st gear.

Sometimes pulling into moving traffic (in safe conditions), i actually feel dangerous because there is not enough go in 1st and then the onset of turbo lag in 2nd. I have to rev to 2k rpm and ride on the bite to move off sometimes just to make sure that i will be safe.

Well this is my experience in driving in inner london parts anyway.

yeah but no offence, london is *****e for cars anyway

None taken and you're not wrong.

I know what you mean, In london you can't be doing with turbo lag

I'm not sure how many miles your motor has but mine has defiantly improved towards the 20k mark. But it still needs a bit of revving.

There is a massive difference, either lag, come on.... go, go...... OR its like s**t off a shovel with revs, spinning in the wet....., until it quickly needs a gear change :)

1st and 2nd are pants but once in 3rd onwards the car is a pleasure to drive. My start using my subaru to tow the auris in 1st and 2nd lol....

Just think if the t180 has 2 turbos

A small one just to get it moving and then a bigger one at 2.8k all the way up to redline. No-one would complain then. :D

The combination of weight, turbo size and torque etc i think all weighs against decent 1st and 2nd gear performance.

I believe the Saab's 1.9 TTiD is twin and supposedly works bl00dy well.

yes but saabs are basically vaxhaulls and have gone bust anyway. They have the audasity to charge 20k for what is basically a 11k vectra. talking about the 93 here

BMW 123d has this set up, and it seems to be the diesel performance yardstick atm, no lag from 1000revs upwards

I was thinking of that little beauty as a i wrote that - superb little mover. Not only does it handle good in the twisty like the 1 series chasis does but it flies out of the corners too.

I'm envious of that cars setup. You can't go wrong with a 123d as a fairly priced hatch. Or if you want to splash out the 335d is sublime.

My head is ruling me at the moment. :)

only problem with that though is BMW's absolutly appaling reliability figures. BMW cars according to top gear are in the top 5 of car makes that are likely to breakdown or have reliabilty issues, were as toyota on the other hand, well i dont think they know the meaning of un-reliable

Certainly, thats why i haven't bought one yet. Superb to drive, awesome engines but you hear a lot of stories about problems and the last thing i want is an expensive newish car with problems.

I'm not suprised, in order to be the "best" they push the boundary. I mean how on earth can a 330d do 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, 49MPG combined and less co2 emitted than a d-cat t180 thats slower and consumes a lot more fuel.

Thats impressive but no manufacturer can even get close the the speed, unbelievable fuel economy and good co2 levels. Take the 320d a direct comparison for the t180, 58MPG combined and 128g/km co2. T180 is 45MPG and 158g/km.

They must tweaking the engine to its limits.
