Valve Clearances

You use a special tool to compress the valve lifters and then use suitable shims to achieve the clearance. Don't get involved unless you are competent and really need to.

I hope this helps.

the adjustment info is in the haynes manual; for what its worth. What mileage has the engine done? My 3SFE engine did 150000 miles and we never touched the shims.

The engine is in a TD 2000, if you are wondering what it is it is one of these :

It has done 3000 miles since new but is making a distinct ticking noise from the engine whilst idling and we've been told that it is probably the valve clearances. Has anyone else got any other ideas as to what it maybe?

Get a long screwdriver and press the end onto the injectors. Push your ear onto the screwdriver handle and listen to see if comes from there. Injectors are little solenoids and can make quite a lot of noise.

Next just make sure the spark plugs are tight.

You can sometimes tell if the noise really is a tappet if you listen through the oil filler.

Do you intend adjusting the valve clearances yourself?

don't try the screwdriver trick on the spark plugs as it can be hair-raising!

When you say the engine is new...do you mean the car is new with a used engine or that the engine is really new??? What mileage roughly has the engine done? I find it unusual for the valve clearances to be off unless its worn from oil shortage or its a high mileage engine, which would more than likely show up by the exhaust smoke.

What you need if it is the 3SFE stuck in there is a 3SGTE instead - far more robust engine with a Yamaha head and a bit more oooomph.
