I'm having the same problem. Its like someone has turned the idle speed down. If I stop and put the car in 'park' and then boot the gas a bit the revs will rise and then fall away to nothing causing a stall. Weird and I hope not too expensive to fix. My car needs aservice so I'm hoping it's just an air filter or fuel filter problem. If I discover anything useful I'll pass it on.

These problems can be caused by a few things

1. The car needs a damn good service

2. The ISCV (Idle speed control vavle) is dirty and needs a clean

3. An air leak, most probably at the PCV ( Positive crankcase ventilation valve) and its associated piping

4. The throttle body is gummed up.

5. The EGR is stuck open

6. A vacuum leak elsewhere

7. Fuel filler cap breather hole partially blocked.

8. Timing has slipped

9. Plugs need changing (every 60,000 miles)

Hi I`m a newbie and have a similar problem on previa petrol auto ie accelerator has to be held down to maintain tickover at standstill or engine stalls. Good advice from propnut, dead on target--take it that pcv and piping is accessible on underside of engine--funny it seemed to tickover fine till I replaced seized alternator and fan belt--did dislodge trunking on aircleaner to engine but jubilee clipped it back okay but I guess there must be an air leak somewhere! Had to remove Battery to replace alternator-is there any special procedure so as not to upset the ecu?--presumed its just a normal unbolt and rebolt on--no alarm on car--no immob either I think (only just got it) Heres hoping for reply. Thank you.

Now this may seem like an odd suggestion, but purely based on yor changing the alternator diagnosis try removing the EFI fuse which you will find under the inspction panel in the middle of your dashboard. Leave it out overnight and see if there is any improvement once it is back in.

Otherwise you may just have to go the the process I mentioned previously BUT add to that checking the timng. If should be 12 degress BTDC or 5 degress with TE1 and E1 jumpered.
