Estima Cambelt Nightmare!

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have had my lovely Toyota Estima Emina for two months. It was booked in for a cambelt change next week, but unbelievably the belt went when out driving today! Does anyone know whether it it worth trying to repair the existing engine, or better to buy replacement engine? I can't accept that the car is a write off as it cost me £1500. Any advice anyone? I live in Norfolk. Thanks.

did the belt go when u were driving at speed or when it was idling .the higher the engine revs higher possibility of engine damage

is it under 2ltr if under possible valve and piston damage.worst senario high revs , new piston, valves, new gasket kit, belt and labour

best scenario 2ltr low revs no piston or valve damage new belt gasket kit less labour and friendly cheap garage

get someon who knows what they`re talkin about to look at it i.e. a mechanic and get them to strip it down then you`ll know the extent of the damage and

then they`ll have an idea what it`ll cost

good luck hope this helps

We were doing about 60 MPH, so that doesn't look too good. I will go to local garage tomorrow, but problem is they are not Japanese import experts and I'm worried they may charge over the odds. Thanks for your help anyway.

Your best bet is to join either

www.estima-motoring.co.uk

or

www.estimaowners.com

or both for that matter. On these sites you will get info on what to get and where although most parts are to be found on eBay or breakers yards. You probably will have gotten away with a dented piston but almost certainly you will need a new head and most probably a cam shaft as well. Many of the heads that are sold come complete with camshafts but you should be aware that quality of heads vary wildly Buying a used engine is a 50/50 scenario as apart from the fault you have just suffered these cars are extremely well known for cracking cylinder heads. If doing the job yourself then a top end rebuild is the what I would recommend BUT if paying someone to do it then you will need to take stock of what the car is worth to you. Irrespective what dealers are trying to sell these for at the moment simple fact is they are no longer fetching the silly money they once did. So if you are going to put in another £1500 to get it sorted you best be planning to keep it for the next 5 - 8 years.

It s a common problem with these as they are getting older the seals are breaking down but also if previous users have used veg oil in the car it is thicker creating higher pressures so leaks
