I'm sure that I've read this topic from you before, did nobody have any ideas? or is it deja-vu on my part?

I think you may find that unit you describe does come apart & has tiny little bulbs that look like tiny top-hat's. Recently changed some on a MK2, 5 bulbs in total 4 with Black bulb holders & one with Grey bulb holder. Forum user called Kingo may be able to confirm this, it is possible MK1 is different to MK2. But should you have more than one bulb, change them all whilst unit stripped.

Regards, Beagh.

PS: Let us know how you get on.

Hi,

just replaced the bulbs behind the heater controls on my '99 Avensis, thanks to some help from 'Avensis luna' on here.

Here's what I did:

1. pull out centre console & disconnect 3 cables behind (alarm, hazards, and rear window heater)

2. pull off the plastic tip from the air recycling lever

3. pull out the 3 heater knobs. This was difficult by hand so used pliers and a cloth.

4. remove the front panel to the heating unit (fiddly but is easier if you unscrew the bracket for the stereo)

5. remove the blown bulb, or probably best to replace all 3 (@75p each)

NB I nipped to the shops with the centre console removed, didn't realise that this stopped the indicators working!

Hope this helps.
