Its been a while since ive posted think thats a good thing as BLUE has behaved its self and nothing gone wrong and all is well with the world, well almost been reading about the ECU upgrade and will be mentioning that at first service but recently just noticed a intermitant small knock/noise coming from front suspension which can at times be felt through the steering Anybody out there got any ideas is it normal or is just the suspension slackening off? after 5000 miles hope not !!!

Also any 08 owners out there hows it been for you in your first year !!! Time does fly when your having fun !!!!

Get it into the dealers and let them have a look. There are a few issues with knocking noises. Usually a part of the steering column. Nothing major, just an irritating knock. You can have the ECU issue sorted at same time ;)

Hi,

my '08 XT5 D-4D will be a year old at the end of March. It will also have done just on 10k miles at the same time - all these trips to Dundee and Switzerland! Impressions: on the plus side, the most comfortable, easy to drive car I've had - and I paid a fair bit more for some of them! After a Vitara, the handling is excellent and the steering frighteningly accurate. VSC probably has something to do with that but I've never had a car that understeered less. A few near misses with kerbs on roundabouts at first but that's all history now.

A few minor niggles that I'll mention at it's first service:

1) The reversing sensors seem to have a mind of their own, they have never failed to accurately allow me to park 300mm away from a wall but they do seem to bleep at nothing when reverse is selected and sometimes bleep whe you are reversing miles away from anything.

2) When you shut the rear door there appears to be something that sounds as if it's made of plastic and not secured properly - makes a horrible sort of twang when the door is closed even quiet gently. I have a suspicion that it is the nearside rear light lens or maybe the bottom half of the rear door.

3) The car is astral black, which needs a lot of cleaning ( which I don't mind at all as it looks great when it is clean ). I always clean the inside first and take out the Toyota mats, shake them then vacuum clean them. Despite this the drivers is weraring quiet badly under my heels and starting to look really scruffy.

4) ( Not a service issue ) I also bought a spare wheel which I carry in the boot despite the room it takes up. Seems as though Toyota have started to fit spares on all the models ( SR180 excepted ) so I'm a bit annoyed about that, I would love a door mounted spare.

I changed the oil and filter at 5k - I was not comfortable leaving the oil in a new engine for 10k. Anchorman's instructions to the rescue again! - cheers mate! I have also put a can of injector cleaner in the last tank of fuel to try and preserve the fuel consumption and exhaust cleanliness at their original levels. I'm half wishing that I hadn't done that as the ECU will need upgrading when it is serviced so any difference the cleaner makes will be just about impossible to seperate from the effect of the upgrade.

Only mods to the original spec: HID dip beams, Toyota iPod kit, bluetooth phone ( Sony Ericsson K800i ) and TPMS.

Bought the car from RRG at Rochdale and will be shopping round for the first service in the next couple of weeks.

My T180 developed a knock from the steering and the dealer eventually replaced the two part steering column under warranty. It took them a while to find the problem but I understand that there is now a technical bulletin highlighting the issue.

Thanks for that it seems more noticable at lower speeds and more so when turning in and out of drive, over kerbs (uneven surface?) but is intermitant so as sure as a cats a hairy beast when i take it to Mr T it wont do it and make a fool out of me ! Will let you all know when i get back how i got on but still think Rav is one of the best motors ive ever had and if the next year is as good well stuff the recession IVE GOT A RAV !!!

  • 1 month later...

Mine is doing exactly the same!! Let me know how you got on with Toyota so I am armed when I try and get them to find the elusive knocking sound.

Cheers

Just the same with my 2006 XT4, been in to Mr T twice but they couldnt find any problem, I thought it may have been the brakes and felt like it was coming from the front off side. Anyway the car is now a week out of warranty so I suppose they will try and get out of it. Think I will give them a call tomorrow and ask about the TSB

Yes all fixed and noise is gone and it may just be my imagination but the steering now feels more..... smooth and tighter i think thats the word it just feels better well worth the journey to Uncle Arnold and at the service desk i had the wind somewhat taken out of sails as they were up to speed about engine management update and the knocking noise that i notifyied them over phone when making appointment ! Again Uncle Arnold after sales excellent well pleased and the coffee in there wasnt too bad either!

If you've mentioned this fault whilst it was in warranty then they should be sorting it out without any cost to you.

Hi all... ;)

man I almost forgot what this forum looked like... :(

Anywho... down to business... this knocking sound you mention, is it a definate Knock or is it like a judder?

At times (mostly when I've just used the 4x4 button) I get a juddering when going round a corner (ie like on a ramp in the carpark) Now I know it aint me speeding up the ramp and sliding in the bends as I at times get the judder when out and about...

So is this what you chaps are talking aboot? Or have I got sommet else? Need to get all the niggly stuff sorted as Big Reds warranty runs out in June.....

Regards

Rob

Rob the "knock / noise " i was experiencing was more like a dull thump when turning at low speed or when going over an uneven road (which are not hard too find up here in ECOSSE) almost as the toyota service bulletin describes you could feel it through the steering it was again like a click as if somthing was loose on suspension but the thing you describe doesnt sound like what i had as i very rarely have my rav in 4 wheel drive so couldnt comment about that but the previous rav i had had major probs with wheel balance as i couldnt get them balanced and always had a judder at certain speed but im sure youve already thought of that! But as your motor is still under warranty act now and dont go away till all is well hope you get your prob sorted soon :)

I had this noise. At first I thought it was the steering intermediate shaft which was replaced under warranty but after 2 or 3 weeks the noise came back. It did it mostly when slowing down to turn left at a junction and a got a kind of knocking/juddering noise from the offside like you might get if a dry rubber bush was being twisted. Eventually RRG decided to try some shims at the top of the suspension which were very inexpensive (but quite labour intensive to fit) and it has completely cured it. I will dig the part numbers out of my file tomorrow.
