Hi

I have just taken delivery of my new Aygo platinum, and I notice that the spare wheel is a steel one not an alloy one. Is this normal?

Thanks

yes indeed. Most manufacturers save money that way now.

Actually, I have never checked mine fully, have they fitted a full size wheel or is it s spacesaver ? The full size wheel is pretty slim of course so it would be ironic if they had put a 135/ in there .. :D

Usually you only get five alloys if the alloys are original equipment in the car, not a special edition like the Black or the Platinum.

Yep, it's a full size spare. Unfortunately you've got me going on my favourite gripe! (Groans of despair from around the country) If Toyota can fit a full size spare in a car as small as the Aygo why can't others fit full size spares in bigger cars. As I've moaned about before, previous cars have had 'space savers' yet the spare wheel well could easily have been deeper without compromising ground clearance. They should correctly be called 'cost savers'. Another drawback I've recently learned about with some cars is that the space saver is a smaller diameter than the normal wheels. Surely this puts a strain on the differential?

Rant over.

Bob,

Whatever you do don't loose that box with the locking wheel nut key. You should find 4 bolts in there , these are for the steel spare.

The Alloy bolts are different.

My alloy bolts have the cone neck for the steel wheels AND the flat face for the alloys. They're dual use for me.

After all the cost cutting on the Aygo they put a full size spare in ..who would have thunk it. :D

I guess it would cost too much to develop a new 14 inch yet thinner spare wheel than just stick in the full size ones with standard tyre.

Why don't they just put in a can though? Most people nowadays just ring the roadside assistance rather than struggle with the nuts or get their hands dirty, the can would be easier for a lot of folks, though of course it does have it's limitations.

My wife had a flat in the Astra the other day and said she could not get the nut off on the phone. "Put the handle in parallel to the floor and jump on it if it is too tight " I helpfully said. Turns out she was talking about the plastic wing nut that keeps the spare tyre in place in the boot. More spinach for that girl me thinks.

Actually that is one of my gripes, I hate those car jacks that you get with cars. They are wobbly and you always skim your knuckles. I recommend everyone buys a proper trolley car jack, well worth the investment. Of course I tend to leave mine in the garage .. cough...

Makes sense for all cars to have 'space saver' spare tyres I think since you get more space in the car and lose a bit of the weight also.

Remember they are only there to get you to the garage, not to drive everywhere as normal

I searched for ages to find run-flat tyres that would fit, but was unsuccessful

Yep, mine too. The bolts in the box were just 4 of the same that had been replaced with locking bolts.
