Had my celica for nearly a year with no trouble at all, however a couple of months ago a squeaking noise developed in the rear, I had it in to a body shop to touch up some bits and he told me it was the rear bearing going, and since then i've found it's an issue that might result in the entire wheel coming off in transit, is this correct?

Took it into a mechanic's today, and he's just quoted me 2 hours labour @ £30 p/hr and about £340 for the part, surely this can't be right?

Any info/advice would be seriously helpful as just didn't expect it to be so expensive!

Update your profile to reflect what model celica you have, I could look the price up for you if I know what model you have ;)

It's a 2000 vvti model, just come back from mechanic's and he said it obviously isn't just the metal ball bit, it's the unit, which also has an ABS ring, hence the price, he admitted he couldn't be 100% sure that is was the bearing and had noticed one of the alloy cap's was a bit loose, he recommended replacing the brake discs and pads on the rear as that does need doing and quoted £160 for that, and then seeing if there's still any noise.

I didn't notice any noise at all when I drove off, but there's only quarter of a mile between my work and the mechanic!

That's still crazy money, can't you just get a replacement bearing from your local bearing shop??

On the gen6 you replace the bearings, on the gen 7 you replace the whole hub.

Nope you cant, its a sealed hub with an oddball sized bearing

I would expect a failing bearing to groan quite loudly, not squeak. Perhaps get someone else to check it.

That's exactly what I thought, they weren't 100% sure, but obviously they want to do the repair as they'll get paid for the labour and also make a mark up on the cost of parts.

It's been squeaking for ages now to be honest, initially I thought it was the spoiler that was loose, but it was on fixing that, that the body shop bloke said it was the bearing, again he was probably just hoping to eek some more money out of me!

It didn't flag up on MOT and that was only the other week, surely something that potentially dangerous like a wheel bearing going would be noticed?

Yes the MOT would have said something if it was obvious. They jack up and spin each wheel and wiggle the wheel on the axle to check for worn bearings
