Avensis Build Quality

Hi,

I have recently become the proud(uuum!) owner of a one owner,FSH,Toyota approved 1.8 auto.I have just returned the car to them for the second time complaining about what I thought was a dashboard rattle and the service dept tell me it reqs major repairs/replacement to the steering column!!

This is now in the hands of the insurance investigator.

Wow!...under four years old,14.000 miles and needing serious repairs. Is this an indication of Avensis build quality?

What will go wrong next?

Has anybody here had a similiar experience please,if so was it resolved ok?

Thanks,

Phil.

Hi

Mine has similar issue when cold and after warmed up (by climate) this minor noise disapeared.

It looks like a common problem due to bad sealing.

Hi Igor,

This isn't actually a dashboard problem, its a mechanical problem with the the steering column,

Apparently something to do with excessive play in the power steering motor gears.

Thanks/Phil.

Older cars with low mileage will usually be more susceptible to steering/braking/exhaust issues than a car with higher mileage of similar age because its more likely that they have been 'town pottered'. A car of the same age with 40k on it which has only seen motorway service will show less wear in certain areas because its spent its life on fairly smooth straight roads, compared to stop/start, tight bends, pot holes, parking shuffling etc.

Hi James,

I agree with you about the low mileage, however I think this is an issue that Toyota were aware of and in some cases resolved whilst under

their warranty.

Perhaps there are some Toyota Techs here who might confirm that?

Thanks/Phil.
