Gents/Ladies & thanks in advance..

Need some oil for top-up

Got a manual 2.2D TR March 2008 08 plate. Done 17k, serviced @ 8k just got to needing some oil (hey, not bad!). Any suggestions other than just asking Mr T and buying his?? (I live 66 miles from the nearest dealer so I'd prefer to avoid the trip).

Halfords t'interweb site suggests Halfords 5W/30 Part Synthetic & Castrol Magnatec 5W30 Oil. (Fine)

I've read the manual which lists the varous specs...

Any advice / likes / dislikes

Regards

I have used Castrol edge 0w-30 in my wifes T180 and it seems to work just fine. My father in-law uses the same only the 5w-40 in his and it seems just as good so it's personal preference really.

To 2912pwil,

Plenty of good oils on the market, but i have always used Castrol (magnatec top quality) always put the very best oil you can afford or wish to pay for into your engine.

Regards, Beagh.

I bought 2l of Castrol Magnatec Diesel 10W-40 in Asda for £7 about 1 month ago for top ups.

Should be fine as a rule we don't get the very low temps that would make the 5W a better choice (& if we do our diesel will probably go waxy first as it doesn't have a high proportion of additives to stop it at those temps).

Thanks guys....

In the end bought semi-synth 5W30 from Mr T. Cheaper than Halfords!

i was quite amazed at how expencive halfords was .

I can't help but notice that when there is a question about oil, evrybody (well nearly) talks about the viscosity (5/30, 10/40 etc) but very little about the specification which is equally, if not more, important.

All oil containers should have the API specification on the labelling, I use a semi synthetic 10/40w, API SL/CF (where SL is the petrol spec and CF is the diesel spec).

Check your handbook and always use an oil that is equal to or above the listed spec. ( SL is higher than SJ, CF is higher than CD etc.)

What Beagh1958 uses (Castrol magnatec) is obviously high spec but you can find equally good oils cheaper if you hunt around. Most oils in the UK are blended from BP or Shell base oils and the producers (like Castrol etc.) blend in their additive package to produce the spec required.
