Diesel Tuning

Hi,

I have a 2002 avensis d4d and have finally decided to get it tuned. I have been told it cant be remapped so have to use a tuning box. I was speaking to a guy from angel tuning(anyone heard of this company or products?) and he gave me a unit at £300. Official figures he said was from 110bhp - 135bhp after. These have to be fitted to the commonrail which from experience is very awkward to get at and is no 5 minute job! Once it was fitted i took it for a spin and once i hit 2000rpm in second gear the engine management light came on and the car went into limp mode. Light went out after switching the car off but the same thing kept happening. The guy took it back and said it needed reprogramming. Is this normal? Or is the d4d engine just to sensitive to tune? Also can anyone recommend the best tuning device to use?

Many thanks

Thatch

Angel Tuning I'm sure provided tuning chips for the Ambulance services in Kent, I'm sure i read that somewhere, the common rail should be easily located i would show you mine on my Corolla SR, but haven't got a clue how to upload pictures on here, it should be at the front of you engine just behind the fans?

Hi Thatch, not been involved in this myself as yet but my son is well into Skylines and he reckons it can be due to ( when a turbo is present) the boost is just spiking the preset value in the ecu, this puts the system into "safe mode" and needs to be reset.

Just as a matter of interest has anyone out there come across this tuning part on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Diesel-Tuning-Perfor...%3A1|240%3A1318

Cheers Pete.

From past experience I wouldnt go for these cheap tuning chips, I bought one of e-bay a few months ago for £130 and it turned out to be a resistor! and when i tried returning it the bloke ignored my emails and phone calls so your best going with an established tuning firm you can trust, I'm sure Kingo will be around soon enough as he sells decent tuning chips... To thatch,

What sort of milage have you up on the car. £300 is a lot of money for 25bhp & assumed raise in torque figures. A lot of these companies have jumped on the band wagon, try asking some technical questions & in alot of cases they will refer you to a pile of rot on web pages. And the usual Mr so & so from so & so claims his car does seventy miles to the gallon. As suggested by above posting wait for forum user called Kingo who i think works for TOYOTA or is connected in some way, his tuning kit works in a different way & gets high praise from many forum users. I don't doubt some of these other firms supply fine tuning kits, but it would be worth your while comparing the two systems before emptying your pockets. From memory Kingos system varies the injectors, whilst other systems alter ECM settings.

Regards, Beagh.

To thatch,

Should have asked does your engine not come as a 116bhp & 126bhp variant ?

as Beagh1958 has said, there are two ways these tuning modules work.

One plugs into the common rail connector and fools the pump into increasing the pressure, (this is all it does and no matter how technical the box looks that is all it does) on most diesel engines this is sufficient to allow more fuel when the injector opens so increasing power. Dead simple yes?. But the Nipondenso engine management on your Toyota is to clever for it and say no that's not on and shuts the motor down.

The other type spoken of and is supplied by Lindop Toyota, connects to the injectors, by doing this it can count the pulses work out how fast the engine is turning and how far you have you foot down, it then interrupts the signal and re times the injectors to increase power and torque.

I have been using one of these type for around two years now and they are superb, the service I have had from Lindop is first class, my first unit had a slight fault after about 8 months and was replaced without question. When I changed my car I fitted the unit on the new one and it refused to start, removed it again and all was well. An email to Lindop to ask if I needed i different unit received an immediate answer, no the unit was the same but on the new car the injector wires were reversed and they could supply a new wiring harness for the unit or if I was able just reverse the wire on the old one.

If you go for the unit from Lindop sign up on their website and you get 10% discount.

The 2.0 diesel engine can be a bit of a pig to get right. I recently supplied a couple of boxes to a chap in Southern Ireland, his kept going into failsafe too. In the end I got my distributor to send a specifically programmed box out, and it worked a treat. He runs a few taxis and is very happy with the product

PM Me for more details

Kingo

hi all

i am the guy that "kingo" is talking about,my car is 2008 d4d avensis saloon, spoke to john at lindop toyota, fantastic customer service, had a few problems like john said, got sorted

first impressions, after 3000 miles have nothing but praise for the tuning unit, was getting 447miles/720km now getting 521mpg/840km(just when orange light comes on) for approx 54 litres of diesel,80% city driving and the rest motorway carrying 2 or more passengers, with a heavy right foot, will have the cost of the unit saved on diesel in a year or so

the torque increase comes lower down in the rev range, changes the way the car performs, keeping it in the rev band from 1600rpm to 2600 revs is all you will ever need, and feels like there is no strain on the engine

people might ask why not buy the 2.2 d4d version but here in ireland it cost about 5k more than the 2.0 d4d.

so thanks to kingo for all his help, will report back at 10k let ye know how its going

Ruth-Anne, could you let me know where you got this and what is required for installing?

Would like to know the specs etc please.

Also does it invalidate your warranty and has your insurance gone up??

sorry for all the questions.

Google Spider tuning box and you should get all the info you need. You can fit it yourself in about 2 minutes and it has been working extremely well now for over a year with no problems to report. I also have one fitted to my motor as well and its been on 2 years with the same results.

I think from memory it lifts a 150 to 180 and a 180 to 215bhp.

Insurance is bad enough over here without giving them another reason to extort cash from me. I won't be long taking it off and if i am dead it won't really matter.

Hi Lungo

I have the TMC unit supplied by Lindop Toyota and I have informed my insurance company and no increase in premium.

Dead easy to install just plugs to the injectors and a lead to the Battery.

Not sure how it would affect warranty perhaps best to unplug it before taking to Mr T. However the makers state that it is designed to work within the safety tolerance set by Toyota.

Superb bit of kit, really transforms the car.

If it's good enough to be supplied by a Toyota Dealer then it must be good.

Thanks for that but I think you will find that the only recommended chip that is actually supplied by Toyota Dealers is the HIlux and no other , look at my thread

'T180 Owners! Chip Or Remap Available Now?'

To me,AS I UNDERSTAND IT, it is NOT supplied by a Toyota Dealer and is NOT a Toyota part at all but is supplied and I guess sold in a TOYOTA DEALER which gives the wrong impression that it is a TOYOTA PART!!!! wondered if customers are actually told this when they buy this and how is it advertised???

Not being an a**ehole but just making sure that customers who buy this chip are told the full story.

I am surprised NO ONE has actually commented on this NOT being a TOYOTA PART????

Hi Lungo

No one is suggesting it is an approved Toyota accessory.

The supplying dealer Lindop Toyota are franchised Toyota dealers and they supply it, they do not advertise it as an approved Toyota part, nor even try to indicate it may be.

If you read my previous post I said that if it is good enough to be supplied by a Toyota dealer (which it is) then it must be good.

I rather think that perhaps you were. If you don't like me trying to help, ignore me, no need to shout.

Hi Revband,

i am sorry but I was not shouting at you. :( :(

Please accept my sincere apologies, I was only trying to make sure that everyone knows that it is not an approve Toyota part even if it is being 'sold' in a toyota dealer. (maybe this is the only way of selling it??)

I have been trying to find out what is the main benefit of this one against all the others but was moving towards this as I thought (which I should not do) that it was an approve toyota part as it was being sold via a toyota franchise and will have the backing of toyota but really it is not.

If this was sold elsewhere would it still have been appealling??!!!

Maybe I should keep my views to myself and let people believe what they want to. :!Removed!: :!Removed!:

No offence taken perhaps I misunderstood.

For information, when I advised my Insurers about the unit they required full technical details of the unit I emailed Lindop and they contacted their suppliers for the info required and sent it on to me.

The unit is made in Germany and is TUV approved, on my Avensis 150 the BHP is increased to 180 and the torque is also increased by 20% I can't recall the exact figures at present, the email is on my work computer, also it does not interfere in any way with the safety sensors fitted to the car and is designed to run within the tolerance set by Toyota.

I am sure that you can buy the unit elsewhere I don't know where and I don't think Lindop will tell you.

As I said all safety parameters are met by the unit, But the unit can be removed in five minutes so before going for service I will take it off. In the worst case I don't see how in the unlikely event of the unit causing damage that Lindop as the supplier can refuse a warranty claim on the car.

Thanks mate :)

Guess I was a bit too strong in my reply but certain toyota dealers over here do not want to know you after you have purchased their cars.

I have had 3 toyotas and its not mostly because of the dealer but the actual car.

I am lucky that I have found a decent dealer here but they are very strict as in what is covered under warranty etc..

Maybe I should not have mentioned anything about the chip??!!!

I am moving towards the spider as this has been used in a few different diesel cars and they have all been very good reports.

I have been using a Synergy box from http://www.tuning-diesels.com on my 2.2 d4d for about 5000 miles. It is smooth, adjustable externally, and well made. I bought mine based on recommendations from a couple of friends and have not been disappointed. Not expensive either.
