I bought my Aygo Platinum mmt last May - love the car - fuel consumption lousy!

I traded in a Lexus 4.2 V8, and am used to big cars, but did not find the change as bad as I expected. It's fun to drive, but my fuel consumption varies from 37 mpg to (best) 46mpg. I'm not too worried, as have only yet done about 3,700 miles. I suspect the bad weather, aircon, and leaving the car to warm up when frosted will all have a bad effect. However, I didn't get above 43 mpg last summer. I know the first thing to look at is tyre pressures......all at 34 psi, checked weekly. My driving style? Probably too enthusiastic, but I had expected to get nearer 50 mpg. ( I have a Smart Roadster, which I drive the nuts off, and still get 50 mpg out of that).

Dealer says it's probably down to me!

Any one got any ideas? :)

I believe the mmt gearbox saps a bit of the power and hence reduces efficiency/economy, but you can't do much about that!

The MMT-box is the EXACT SAME box as the manual box, only it's operated

by actuators instead of mechanical linkages that the actual driver handles.

So there are no extra losses in the powertrain with the robotized gearbox,

unlike a conventional automatic that uses a torque convertor and planetary gears

If you look at the economy-figueres you'll see thet they are the same between manual

and (semi)auto, the only difference is the 0-60 time, as a manual can be shifted faster.

Hi,

Leave it in manual mode not auto mode. Auto mode holds the gears too long. In manual mode change up to 2nd at 10mph, 3rd at 20mpg, 4th at 30mph etc etc and you should get better economy.

Interesting. Also old bloke (for an Aygo driver anyway), also traded in my Lexus 4.3 last April, also for Aygo Platinum petrol, although the manual version.

I measure the mpg pretty carefully brim to brim, and have recorded every fill up since purchase.

Best ever mpg was a real honest to god 64mpg, worst ever was 52 mpg, average over the year is 58 mpg. My first ever tank was 55mpg from brand new.

For what it's worth, I've saved £2700 in costs over the Lexus in the past 11 months.

So, sounds like that mpg is low, or you are measiuring it wrong!

Apologies, I thought the aygo mmt was the same as the "auto" box in the iQ which I now see is NOT the same.

The iQ "auto" box does seem to sap some power, but not the Aygo one.

Back to school for me!

The iQ uses yet another kind of box, namely a CVT: Continous Variable Transmission.

This uses a set of discs with a pushbelt in between. The dics make a V-shaped

channel that can be made wider and smaller, which causes the belt to ride up

and down in the channel, effectively changing the gear ratio.

So it can make ANY ration in between the highest and lowest possible ratio.

This is in effect a Dutch invention and is an evolution of the DAF 33's Variomatic,

but that used two rubber pull-belts, so it could do wiyhout a differential.

The friction in the CVT causes it to sap power, I'm not sure if it uses

an automated clutch or a torque convertor. Economy is better than a

conventional automatic, but it's still a little less than a manual box.

AFAIK the Prius also uses a CVT, as well as cars like the Nissan Murano.

Fun with the CVT is that you can actually accelerate with DROPPING revs :D

Excellent info, thanks!

I remember the little DAF dafodil (I think it was called) from the 1960's, which was thought to be ahead of it's time, transmission wise, even then.

My parents tell the story of when my mum had one of those - apparently they changed up the gears even when reversing, allowing you to potentially go as fast in reverse as you could forward.

Very true! That's why these DAF cars were VERY popular in the 80's for "reverse racing".

There even was a class for reverse racing with caravan, only they would hook up to

a towball on the front bumper, with only the car going in reverse :D

Have a look here:

Sorry, it's only in Dutch...

A CVT usually uses a variator, but I'll find out .
