X Reg Avensis Loosing Oil

Hi,

I have an X reg (2000) avensis and I have to top up the oil about every 3 months. Its taking about 3-4 litres at every top up.

I only drive to work and back so do probably 400 miles a month, not loads of miles.

I have checked under the car and there doesn't appear to be any leaks (on the engine or the road) and its passed the MOT a few weeks ago so I don't think its burning the oil.

The coolant looks ok so I also don't think its leaking into the coolant.

Any ideas?

Tom

Believe me Tom, it will be burning it. Check out the threads on here for oil burning also see this link.

P.S. top up more frequently, 3 to 4 litres engine is nearly empty.

Wow! that was a quick response!

I thought it would show up in the emissions test at the MOT.

In way I'm a bit more relieved that its not a serious gasket problem or something.

Mine is a 1.8 VVT-i so looks like its the same problem as that report. Will call Toyota tomorrow.

Thanks

Tom

No problem Tom, had mine done a while back now and doesn't use a drop anymore. The only bogey for Toyota to wriggle out is service history, if that's fine, you've no worries.

Ah,

Phoned my local dealer and they can't help - Toyota extended their warranty to 7 years but mine, being an X-Reg is 9 years old.

Oh well!

Accept is as the life.I am in the same boat in case it will safe you.

I normally shut my eyes on theis problem ans just add oil when required -- it is cheapper than to overhaul th ewhole engine !!!

I am going to sell my second wife and purchase RAV4 to forget this problem forever.

Cheers/Igor

Theres one good thing Tom, you won't ever have to change the oil, it's on a constant replenish system.

You will become a price checker for oil! I always know the local oil prices. Also you get to know what your car likes and dislikes by listening to the slightest changes in engine pitch! Changes only a canine could hear People cant believe i when they see my head under the bonnet so frequently, female with long blond hair ;)

hi tom

i work in a toyota dealer in the workshop.

the avensis petrol engine does have a common issue with excessive oil consumption. Its a horrible solution but it will probally req a new engine block.

at my garage, we change about one or two every month as it is a common problem.

that is assuming your car has no oil leaks.

if you have toyota extended warranty, they should help out quite a bit with parts cost.

We've alreday covered this one, his car is too old to qualify for the extended cover.Although it beats me why there is an age limit when the problem is a design fault. The inherent fault was there from manufacture and is still there whether it is a 2 year old car or a 12 year old car.

  • 3 weeks later...

I suppose i am screwed to i have a 52 reg avensis with 81,000 on the clock and have to top the oil up every week normally by about a litre only do about 150-200 miles a week but the previous owner took it on himself to service the car himself surely toyota have messed up with the design of the 1.8 vvti engine and as soon as they knew that there was a design fault they should of done a recall and eradicated the problem

A bit of a bummer really. Service history is gonna be an issue on this one, totally agree that as it is a known design fault there shouldn't be any conditions attached to it, Mr T messed up, Mr T should put it right. :argue:

yes MrT has to insist to recall.

but normally each official dealer has own policy with claims and in case the car has been purchased from anothers but not officials -- these cars are not recalled due to this problem and all cost for engine block substituting are for the client's acccount, even though the cliient has done all sercvices as per manual.

i have repeatedly asked local ooff deallers to have my car recalled but they told me the car was purchased not from them and that is all.

now i am face to face to this issue unless this lady will be sold.

cheers/Igor
