Avensis Clutch Bite Near Top Of Pedal - Is It Worn Out?

Hi,

I'm on a roll to get all the niggling little problems sorted with my avensis.

More recently I have noticed that my clutch bite point is right near the top of the pedal. If I simply rest my foot with a slight bit of presure on the pedal I can feel/hear the clutch slipping.

Its also very stiff (If im in stationary traffic it can get quite tiring and makes my leg/foot ache.

Is there a way to adjust this?

When the clutch is going should it be near the bottom of the pedal or near the top?

is it petrol or diesel ? petrol one arn,t bad , about £250 total . diesel on the other hand could be a bit more costly . if its deemed the fly wheel is nearing the end of its life . I converted my d4d 3 weeks ago to a conventional type flywheel total cost of parts was £450 . Not a bad diy job if you,ve done clutches before . if not you,re lokking at about £175 labour.

Hi Tom,

In September 2008 I replaced mine at Toyota (mine is D4-D Avensis T3-X 03Reg). No flywheel only the clutch. Parts and labour amounted to ca. £ 650. If you go to an independent this should drop. With Toyota you get three years warranty though.

oh dear you where robbed mate . a clutch kit is only around the £200 mark , so £450 for 5 hours labour is a bit heavy .

I know it is expensive. The labour at Toyota is £ 73 an hour. In a garage they would have charged me £ 50. With Toyota I get three years warranty (you are asked to pay £ 150 for three years warranty for a LCD TV that costs £700 for example). I would have saved £ 100 but in the long run having everything done at Toyota will give me some extra bucks when I am selling the car.

It is a fine balance where you go. Unless one is capable to look after their cars themselves for everything (an this becomes more difficult as the cars turn into running PC's) we have to make choices. I used to go to an independent garage with my Ford Mondeo. They seemed nice chaps and everything was fine until my front brake caliper went loose. They change the pads on both, did not replace the calipers and a week later they "realised" that they had to replace them as well. The result: I paid the labour twice. No arguments were possible, the problem according to the guy had developed during this single week :angry:

Since then I have decided to bite the bullet and use decent places that you can get back to and get support. If you look into another thread I am having an appointment on 17th for them to go through the clutch as it gave me some problems a couple of weeks ago.

This is an endless discussion if you think of it. This forum is great place as you have got people like Q.S. and Beagh 1958 that are so experienced that you almost get the disagnose before you even visit the garage :) . And it is fun. If you could help someone - it is priceless. :D
