Is This A Dmf Problem

For sometime I have noticed a slight more vibration at tickover in my 52 plate Rav4 D4D 59,984 miles. I have also on occasions thought the exhust was blowing slightly. Yesterday on my way to work when I accelerated under load there was a tracktor type noise. After checking engine mounts, exhust etc I took the car out for another run but the noise had gone. I have booked the car into Toyota tommorow for them to check. Could this be another DMF problem do these sometimes intermitantly give out strange noises. Any help or advice appreciated.

Sounds like what I had before my DMF went... You better be sitting down when TOYOTA call you back with the diagnosis :unsure: :unsure:

Thanks for that, I have read all the pinned explanation on the DMF but have not seen any comments about the noise being there on one journey and then a couple of hours later not being there. Are Toyata still replacing these FOC under 60,000

unfortunately it was 60000 or 5yrs, whichever came first..

I'm pretty sure they are not.

unfortunately it was 60000 or 5yrs, whichever came first..

What to do Mark, is to borrow LHs regy plates and VIN plate and install them on your own car...to return them after the fix.

Another one for the almanac!

Well guys the Rav went in for the diagnostics today. The mechanic drove the car and very quickly said yes it is the DMF on its way out, only drove the rav around the garage car park. I have asked them to quote but I am still awaiting a reply. I have pointed out that the Rav has only done 59900 miles and also that myself and my farther have been loyal to this particular dealership for many years. Hope they look at this favourably for me but we will wait and see. The mechanic did say if I obtained the parts they would still fit them for me and it takes 6 hours to do the job. He also said he did not like the DMF himself.

Can anyone give me any advice on how difficult this is to do myself. I have good mechanical skills and knowledge of repairing cars such as gearboxes, clutches, Head gaskets, suspension, brakes etc. I do also have a large factory that I can do the work in with lifting equipment but no pit or car lift just axel stands etc. I can get the help of several people so hands are not a problem. The mechanic did say you need to remove the subframe so do you need alignment tools for reassembly or any other special tools.

Again many thanks for the not so good news but any further information and advice appreciated

I did mine on the front drive on my own. If youve got help itle be a doddle. Sounds like you've got plenty of experience. I did mine on bog basic axle stands with a beam across them under the front body jacking points. I also used a DIY wooden engine beam to hold the engine and lower the box. I took the sub frame off.

With the front Drive shafts I left them in the wheel hubs and moved them out of the box that way I didn't have to worry about disturbing wheel bearings etc.

Take photos as you go to see where bits go on reasembly.

I had a slight problem with the little stay things on the side of the shocks as they had corroded on the threads. eventualy I just cut them off and bought some pattern parts to replace them. No problem.

Quite happy to stay in touch and talk you through how I did it if you like.

Anchorman was a great resource as well.

Just to give you an update and say thanks for all the advise and help.

I managed to pick up a genuine Toyota DMF and clutch kit of eBay for £480.00, collected it today. My local dealer has agreed to fit this for me for £375.00 + the oils required. They say it will take 6 hours to do the job so have booked it in for next Monday.

They were also kind enough to quote me the old and new part numbers, is this because the parts have been changed in someway, when I asked them if this was the reason they were not really open about the number change.

I have listed below the part numbers quoted as I thought it may be helpful for others.

Old Part Numbers New Part Numbers

DMF: T13450-27021 T13450-27022

Clutch Cover: T31210-20371 T31210-20372 My new one actually says T31210-20373

Cluch Disc: T31250-20351 T31250-20353

Cluch bearing T31230-20191 No change.

Can anyone tell me that I should expect this to happen again in 50 to 60 thousand miles?

Again many thanks for the help and advice and offers of information should I have done the job on my own.

It is virtually impossible to predict the life of the DMF any more accurately than say that of a light bulb. It is true that several owners have had a failure at that kind of mileage but some have had them go sooner and many not at all.

You will have trouble finding a modern diesel engined vehicle without a DMF and they all have a risk attached - some more than others.

I think the deal you got with the parts and fitting is excellent as it is not uncommon for owners here to report costs of £1800 -£2000 all in.

I have recorded the numbers for future use - thanks.

Rav goes in tomorrow so hopfully all will go well.

Just one point I would like any comments about. I asked the Toyata dealer the question about the update to the ECU unit to reduce the stress on the flywheel during clutch operation. There reply was that there was an update but this was a new ECU unit not just a program update and would cost in around £700.00 + to do. Is this correct or is there a ECU program update and can I insist they perform the update if this is the case. I do tow a Caravan with my Rav and obviously want to do everthing to stop this happening again.

Does that mean its better to drive the Rav the new method of driving were the brakes are used more when coming up to junctions etc and not using the gerbox to go down the gears to slow down. I have always excercised reasonable care with the clutch knowing about the problem but I do go down the gearbox when stopping or slowing down.

You are right Fuj' I think it applies to real hooligans rather than "spirited driving". For most people driving normally is all that is required.

I would love to know if TGB have ever had an owner with the new ECU ever go back for a econd DMF but I guess we'll never know that!
