57 Plate Toyota Rav 4 Xt4 Petrol Gearbox Problem

ok, i have the above car!

I brought the car brand new from Westland Toyota, Bromsgrove!

Ever since i have had the car, i have had a vibration through the gearbox in 5th gear!

The car has been returned to Toyota 14 times and has had the following changed and checked:

new 5th gear

new flywheel

new gear cables

The problem is STILL there!

Ive contacted Japan and all of the head offices and they have basically told me and i quote:

"Its an exceptable vibration"

Theyve done a back to back test with a 57 plate Rav 4, which the head mechanic said was worse than mine!

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Crumbs - Bromsgrove

Just joking! Been there a few times but can't ever remember seeing a T garage. However, how many miles has the car done?

Have you tried maybe driving a similar car thats for sale in any garages locally? Like a test drive pretending to be interested in buying. Just so you can compare things yourself.

I don't doubt your complaining of a 5th gear vibration by the way.

On my number 2 RAV (which is a 1994 model just like number 1) the guys at the garage did my engine turbo conversion but left off a clutch damper. It resulted in a vibration mainly through the clutch pedal but as its not that bad at all I am happy with it. Number 1 RAV doesn't have a vibration from the gearbox and its now 174,000+ miles on the same box and drivetrain.

Vibrations seem to be more common on the diesel version. If its been there from new, it kind of suggests that something has been missed at point of manufacture....

Make sure that your complaint is well documented in writing and of course keep copies. (I'm sure you have).

I'm a great believer in using a specialist to check things that are maybe not quite ordinary. There must be a gearbox specialist in the Birmingham area that could pass a comment on the box and its behaviour which you can use to argue with Toyota. Maybe another RAV owner in your area with the same car type could try yours out as well for another opinion??
