I had a K&N replacement element in my Aygo and it made pretty much no difference, there was a very slight difference on long motorway hills but that was it.

The same filter is now in my 58 Yaris 1.3 SR and again, there is no noticable gain in power/economy. No idea what a 57i kit would yield. Some one on here must have one.

Does it make nice sucking sounds though ?

Na, a replacement element will never give you a good/better induction noise. Build yourself a custom cold air induction kit. Will cost significantly less than a K&N, and get you at least if not better results.

There's a guy on this forum that used a sports filter and sports exhaust a got only 4bhp extra at the wheels. The VVTi system take care of the breathing quite well.

Try NGK Iridium spark plugs instead.

Can you elucidate? I think those are the type I had in a Nissan Maxima (and are also used in a Honda NSX). I thought the advantage was long life - not power? Do I have the wrong end of the stick?

Wouldn't cost much for 3! ;)

-They consume less power than standard plugs, requiring less voltage to spark. Less energy needed for electrics means more for you

-The smaller electrodes means the spark is more centered in the combustion chamber compared to standard plugs. This means the flame front is more evenly spread, which can help marginally with torque (depending on how bad the original plugs were)

I've had Iridium plugs put in a few revvy 125cc scooters and a revvy car (up to 9000 rpm) and can confidently say they make the engine run more smoothly/quietly and start better. I can't say if there was a power increase because I didn't put it on a dyno, but it sounded healthier.

Actually it does. I fitted mine yesterday and you can hear the air going in if you listen carefully*. Also you can hear the engine more as the old airbox seems to have absorbed some of the sounds when it was fitted. No increase in performance detectable. The kit is very well made but expensive. Easy to fit also. I have the cold air pipe going from the front grill to in front of the air filter but as it is not sealed the air will not be that cool compared to a proper designed for purpose job.

* The underbonnet sound deadening material was junked months ago note.

I think by replacement element he meant the K&N air filter, not the kit

Sound deadening material? This the big plastic cover in the centre?

I have a k&n induction kit on my aygo. Makes a great sound when you step on the gas and engine feels a bit more responsive. I've heard that there were some power gains but nothing special. Economywise i used to do 80miles with 10euro petrol, now i do 90. Its quite expensive though but the good thing is you don't need to stay changing the filter anymore, just clean it a bit.

That's interesting, I'll see how it goes on the fuel. I actually thought my exhaust even sounded louder yesterday but then thought I had probably been listening too hard for too long and was cracking up

I'll stick 99 RON petrol in and see whether more octane and more air adds anything, just out of scientific curiosity.

After driving around quite a bit and hitting 6400rpm I have to agree with Zac07 and say this is a lot noisier. In a good way ;). The lack of the plastic airbox on top of the engine really lets the sound pass through well. Not what most people want with a car I guess but is rather fine on a good B road blast.

Interestingly, it now seems to even more vibratory without the airbox acting as a damper on top. My windscreen vibrates between 3000-4000 meaning the rearview mirror blurs and you can no longer see as clearly the Nissan Micra you just blew away getting smaller and smaller ...

The engine is the defining item on this car and should be encouraged as much as possible to sing it's song
