2002 Yaris Gs Key Replacement

I've just bought a 2002 Yaris. Unfortunately it only came with one black key, with no buttons. It is a GS spec and I was wondering if this model had remote door locking. I suspect not but if anyone knows for definite it would help me get a replacement key.

On that topic, I've seen blank transponder keys on eBay (~£15) and instructions how to program. Has anyone any experience of either?

Where would I get such a key cut?

Many thanks. The car is for my daughter when she passes her test and I'd like to have a spare (or two)

Pretty sure that GS spec did have remote locking, I think it was just the S spec that didn't.... why don't you do an autotrader search for GS models to see if they state remote locking to double check?

Maybe this thread will help you with the key problem?

I can confrim that the GS didn't have remote central locking as standard. Just manual central locking and the S had no central locking what so ever as standard.

Thanks all.

It looks like the GS doesn't have remote locking (no blanked passenger lock, nothing in the GS Autotrader descriptions).

The other thread is about replacing a complete lost set of keys. As far as I know I have a black master key with transponder and all I need is to get another similar cut and coded. It is the coding instructions I need.

Adding a key for the Immobiliser:

Using a black key you have that is already programmed to the immobiliser:

Insert already programmed black key into ignition switch

Within 15 seconds: Press and release accelerator pedal 5 times.

Within 20 seconds: Press and release brake pedal 6 times.

Remove black key.

Within 10 seconds: Insert the new black key to be programmed into ignition switch.

Within 10 seconds: Press and release accelerator pedal once.

Security warning lamp will flash.

After 1 minute security warning lamp will extinguish.

If programming another key:

Within 10 seconds: Insert black key to be programmed into ignition switch.

Press and release accelerator pedal once.

Security warning lamp will flash.

After 1 minute security warning lamp will extinguish.

TO EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE: REMOVE IGNITION KEY AND PRESS BRAKE PEDAL AT LEAST ONCE WITHIN 10 SECONDS, OR WAIT 10 SECONDS.

NOTE: A MAXIMUM OF 7 BLACK KEYS CAN BE PROGRAMMED.

Really usefull! Thanks :)

Does anyone know the easy of making the central locking remote? I know where the control unit is under the dash and was wondering if anyone knew what colour the signal wires going to it are, in order to wiring in a remote signalling unit to make the system operatable via remote.

Thanks Nick - now that looks to be what I want. Have you tried it?

John - I take it your Yaris GS has a black solid head key? That's the only one I have.

Yes I have used the method I posted and it worked fine.

Yea, we got 3 keys with the car. Two solid black and a grey if I remember correctly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I got one key cut and it opens all the doors and turns the engine over.

To program it, I followed the instructions above. No joy. After the fourth time I had to give up.

Just to clarify - when it says "Security warning lamp will flash" I've been leaving the key in (since the instructions say nothing about removing the key). The lamp keeps flashing over the minute - I tried waiting longer too but the lamp keeps on going.

As you can guess I'm pretty frustrated - can someone confirm these instructions do work with 2002 Yaris's?

The possibilities are:

  • These are the wrong instructions
  • The instructions are incomplete
  • I'm too thick to follow them
  • The key stock I bought doesn't have a transponder

Help!

On the subject of locking and alarms and what not... I've got a GLS spec and was wondering if it has double locking system or not? The manual states it but not which models. Also, when I lock and unlock the car the indicator lights flash once to signify that it is locked and twice that it is unlocked. Does this mean that it has an alarm also? Again, the manual doesn't state as to which models this applies to. One thing that I know for sure is that it has an immobiliser because of a red light that flashes.

No Yaris came with an alarm apart from the T-Sport. If you have double locking there will be a sticker on the driver side glass.

Dunkelmann the instructions work. You must be doing something wrong or the key has no transponder.

As stated in instructions the last step after waiting for the security light to exstinguish if your not programming a second key is: TO EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE: REMOVE IGNITION KEY AND PRESS BRAKE PEDAL AT LEAST ONCE WITHIN 10 SECONDS, OR WAIT 10 SECONDS.

Above instructions were to program a black key. What colour key is the new one? See my original post. Has instructions for black and grey keys (one step is different depending on colour). http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...c=85266&hl=

The problem is that the security light doesn't extinguish after a couple of minutes. How can one tell if the car is in programming mode? As soon as I put the second key in, even without pressing the accelerator pedal, the security light flashes.

It is a black key I bought from Hull Car Keys on Ebay. It says there is a transponder inside.

I can do this in my sleep so I am following the instructions. I've had my wife and daughter both watch me try to program it.

One problem might be that pumping the brake pedal causes it to stiffen up so there is hardly any travel. I presume that something is detecting the pedal but if there is no travel then how does the car know it is being pressed?

I remember it took me a few goes to do. Are you doing it with the door open or clsoed. Try both.

Tried both.

In desperation, I phoned the local dealer - £50 to get my key programmed!

Looks like I am going to have to Shell out.

By the way where did you get the instructions from? ... and thanks for the help.

See the link I posted in post #14. Someone posted the instructions on my post and I used them and they worked fine for me. Others also posted it worked for them. Dont know why it wont work for you. I wonder if there are different transponders and you need the correct one?

Edit:

http://www.johnrichard.co.uk/Transponder%20Keys/Toyota.htm

Link shows the transponder keys are different depending on the model. I think you may have the wrong transponder key.

I came across this, which appears to be the Toyota Programming Instructions.

I've contacted the eBay seller who has offered to check the key transponder works.

My local Toyota dealer wasn't helpful as regards telling whether the key I got with the car was a master.

Thanks for your help. My next step is to send the key back for checking.
