Hi all

Does anyone out there in Toyota world know of a good make Towbar Mounted Cycle Carrier? If possible the carrier should be able to hold upto 3 mountain bikes and be able to fit on a Rav4 2006 model which has the spare wheel on the back.

Thanx

Go for the Thule 952 type Look Here Best price I found was £55... and holds three bikes...

I'll be getting mine in a few weeks (other bits the wife's car needs first ;) ;) )

Do you know how easy is it to fit your own towbar?

Change a light bulb, wire a plug, re-wire a house I can do easily ;) ;) ... But attempting to splice into the RAV's wiring loom and bolt into the chassis is not for the feint hearted... One member on here has successfully done this and fitted there own tow bar...Using approved parts of course.. B) (a search may bring this thread up, or another member may have it pinned for easy access...)

If your competent in fitting these yourself... then go for it.. otherwise paying just a bit more for a professional job is worth it in the end...

My RAV came fitted with the tow bar...so I had no worries there... :D :D :D

Guilty as charged! I think that a couple of us have done the deed now. I bought a Thule towbar from Halfords as this was the cheapest place by some miles. It is the same one that Toyota fit. However, the Toyota wiring kit is worth every penny as there is no splicing reqiured - just remove existing plugs from their sockets and put in the new ones then plug in the existing ones into the sockets on the new section of loom ( this sounds like rubbish but I'm sure you get the drift ). The only tool that I had to buy for the job was a trim removal tool for £3.70 - otherwise it's just spanners and sockets and a torque wrench if you have one.

Kingo supplied the wiring kit and I would recommend that you consult him if you decide to DIY. The towbar and wiring instructions are very comprehensive, once you get your head around the way they are NOT written!!!! ( i.e. all in pictures )

As I'm getting on a bit, I did the job over two days but in retrospect, could have done it in one with no problem. There are a couple of other threads on the forum concerning the towbar which are well worth digging out.

Good luck!

I fitted my Brink (OEM version of Toyota badged one) towbar to my RAV4.2

The mechanicals were very easy to do

The Electrics I used scotchblocks and while it does work and do the job, I would get a pukka Toyota loom next time if it was not to pricey.

The wiring supplied with the wiring was pretty good and if you work methodically you will be ok.

Thule took over Brink last year and now supply towbars under the Thule name. So you get your towbar and roof bars from the same place

Hi guys

Im having a real job to find this carrier to go on the back of my XT4 as EVERYONE i speak to says that no rack will fit as i have the Toyota detachable towball & not the flange fitting one.

I need one to take 3 bikes and one suggestion was to go for this 4 bike rack as its the only one that will fit and one bike space gets taken up by the spare wheel.

These guys were very helpful and seemed to know their stuff. What do you think?

Any other ideas as i didnt think id have to spend almost £200 (inc postage) for a rack?

Cheers

Do you know how easy is it to fit your own towbar?

I bought and fitted a Thule ( nee Brinks! ) towbar to my 4.3 XT5. The Toyota version is exactly the same bar. Kingo ( Parts King ) supplied me with a Toyota wiring kit which made the job much easier than trying to splice into these modern car looms which appear to have polyethelene insulation on the wire. Ordinary Scotchlok connectors are not very sucessful with this sort of cable as the insulation is very tough and elastic and the overall diameter of the cable is smaller than the older PVC insulated variety - you can crimp the connector on OK but you might not get a connection.

Fitting the towbar was pretty straightforward, I put the car over the pit in the garage but it was unnessecary really. Probably easier on a flat surface. Like many "kits" these days, the instructions were all graphical ( universal language? ), but once you get into it no problem at all. You have to remove the rear bumper to fit the bar and do the wiring, so if you can do it all on the same day it is much easier. As I'm getting a bit past my sell by date, I did the tow bar installation one day and the wiring on the following day BUT I fitted the cable from the towing socket to the inside of the vehicle when I did the bar to avoid removing the bumper twice.

Only two bit of advice that I would offer:

1) Don't wimp out when you look at the instruction for removing the back bumper on the 4.3, it looks a lot, lot worse that it turned out ( only 20 minutes to do it ).

2) If you are just fitting the single 12N socket ( 7 pin ) with the Toyota wiring kit, there may be an error in the instructions. It instructs you to fit the fuse into one of the two holders supplied as part of the front section of the loom adjacent to the Battery. When I got my kit, the instructions specified the wrong fuseholder. When the fuse was put in the proper one everything worked fine. Someone else has had this problem since and cured it the same way.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you do it yourself as it helps to build confidence generally! And - GOOD LUCK.

This post comes a bit late in the day and is possibly slightly off-topic (not being about a cycle carrier) but in case it is of interest - my husband and fitted our own (Brink) towbar to my 2007 XTR without any major problems. The main thing that helped me was to label all the connectors/wires in accordance with the pictures in the Toyota instructions (see anchorman's post above) before I started. I would have been lost without that but appreciate that cleverer people than I can do a perfectly good job without having to resort to such noddy measures. We too found that, for towing the caravan, we had to replace the 10A fuse with a 20A one. And afterwards my dear clever husband replaced the twin 7-pin sockets with a single 13-pin one which fits our new (German) caravan and also allows the bracket to be swung up behind the bumper, which gets around the ground-clearance problem of the double socket.
