To Turbo Or Not To Turbo?

I currently Drive a 1999 toyota SXR Auto. B)

A lot of my friends have told me to go turbo. :(

I have been looking around cars that are stock turbo, but i just love the Celica. ;)

I know there is the Celica GT 4 etc but i am not willing to pay the extra 8k for the name.

SO i have decided to go turbo.

What i need to know is if it is a good Idea or not.

And reasons why or why not.

Also what brand and etc to go for if so.

PLEASE note,

I am in AUSTRALIA only 74 of the GT 4 were imported into this country.

I do not want to upgrade or degrade down models.

My model is an Auto.

hey mate, buying a turbo kit can be really pricy. they kits are around 5 grand. then you have to install them...

in my opinion, you're better off chipping it and adding a wetshot of nitrous. by the sounds of it you want to keep up with your friends who are boosting right? you're not racing all the time, so what's the point? when your friends want to race, kill your engine a little with a bit of nitrous and wipe the smirks off their faces. the rest of the time, enjoy the boost in performance from the chip. also cut down on your weight, increase the diameter of the exhaust and add a good intake. in the end, (if you source your parts well) you're looking at maybe 2000. exhaust is like what, 600? intake 200 at most. chip another 600, and I've found the venom n40-164 nitrous kit for 500. so that's 1900.

just another idea: if they want to race, challenge them to a course with corners lol.

Adding turbo always sounds like a good idea until you realise how much of the engine will need replacing as well. Turbo engines use different pistons and valves at the very least.

if you're really keen on boosting you're going to have to lower the compression significantly if you want to boost it. they sit at 11 I believe, so you'll want to reduce it to 8 or 8.5. get a head gasket from a 1zzfe and slap it on, that should lower the compression to the right range. the turbo kits should have the proper head gasket for that specific turbo. however, if you're going the dr. frankenstein root, you're going to have to alter the ECU anyways. why not just keep your motor N/A and get it chipped? its a lot cheaper. better yet, get a new engine. drop a 3sgte in there. from a crate it will be cheaper than the turbo package. even better still, sell your celica and get a supra (or a volvo 850 turbo.... *drool*) these 2zz engines are a real pain in the nards

Im almost certain that a 1zz headgasket will not fit anything other than a 1zz engine. The 2zz isnt the same engine, has a totally different bore.

Also the 3SGTE swap is one hell of a tough engine swap to do, in fact if your going to transplant the 4WD train also its going to be a nightmare.

If you have a 1zz or 2zz your best off getting one of the bolt on superchargers.

The Blitz kit can make 300bhp on the 2zz using stock internals.

they're both 1.8 liters aren't they? I thought the 2zz just had a higher compression and that "lift" feature. the 2zz is just a 1zz tuned up is it not?

if you dropped the 3sgte in there it would be a pain in the nards, but you wouldn't have to put in a 4wd tranny. yes you would need a new tranny, but you could keep it front wheel.

No the 1zz and 2zz are totally different. Different sizes, stroke, displacement, compression. Different pistons, rods, crank, everything.

I dont think there is a single mechanical part shared between the two in all honesty.

The problem is you would get insaine torque steer in having a FWD 3SGTE.

You would only gain in straight line performance. The handling would be totally ruined and would need lots of suspension tuning to make it handle well and deliver all that torque to the road.

What kinda figures is your 3sgte putting out?

The ST205 came with a specially designed superstrut suspension. This was perfectly setup for getting the best out of the engine and getting that power transmitted to the road.

Im sure your corolla handles well on the standard Corolla struts. But with the correct suspension and geometry you would see huge improvements.

The 3SGTE powered Corolla Rally Car doesnt have the same suspension as the normal road car, it uses pretty much the same superstrut lifted straight off an ST205 (could be the G6R superstrut).

I've had two ST205's and one ST202. Engines and drivetrain aside, the superstrut is massively different to the normal macferson on the s202. You really can put power on through corners in a way that you just cant do on normal struts.

havent had it on the rollers yet, im guessing about 220 bhp
