Try one of the many comparison sites...

Compare the Market.com (or Meerkat, if you prefer!)

Confused.com

Moneysupermarket.com

GoCompare.com

Can't think of any others off the top of my head. A trick for you though, if you find a good quote on one of these sites, don't click the link through to them to buy. Go to the insurance company's site and do a quote directly through them, you normally save money that way (as the comparison sites charge a fee to the insurer for your business which the insurer pass on to you)

Good luck!

Add your mum as a named driver... saved me £50 ;)

im 19, so im on my dads insurance. Also, I wouldnt bother going to comparethemarket.com or any of the others, theyre all crap, and doesnt give accurate quotes

Just need to try various insurance companies but watch for the excesses as they will increase due to being 17 and male.

I personally find elephant.co.uk really reasonable i good option they offer is a 10 month accelerator plan where you can boost up your no claims every 10 months instead of 12. Ive found it good in the long run from insuring my car from been 17. Good luck buddy

When my daughter bought her first car at 17 (Fiesta) she shopped around on the internet, the comparison sites were not so helpful. She did find it saved her quite a bit by adding both my wife and her on her policy, worth checking.

Just remember young man; you have passed your driving test, now is the right time for you to learn how to drive. This is meant in all sincerity; and I wish you a safe and happy future.

I'm male, 17, learning to drive (In my Aygo Black '06) and am insured as the main driver, both parents are insured as named drivers. I am also the registered owner of the car. For fully comprehensive insurance with legal cover i got quoted way above what i currently pay by those silly websites. If you want a genuinely good quote ring a proper insurance broker like AS insurance or something. I currently pay £2600 which is by far the cheapest i could find; and i did check around 20 insurers.

Sorry to tell you this , but if it is discovered that you are the MAIN driver, you will not be insured in the case of an accident or claim. (The insurance companies do check and soon find out who the main driver is)

What you are doing is called "Fronting" and is severely frowned on by the insurance companies (If not illegal)

If you ARE the main driver you should get the insurance in your own name to properly build up your no claims bonus.

Sorry to tell you the above but you would not want to start your motoring career with dodgy insurance cover. :)

I know it's insane isn't it! i got a quote off Marks and Spencer's insurance for £3800

I was going to learn to drive in my mum's Dhiatsu Terios 1.3 but that was going to cost £4000 a year, and that's as a named occasional driver! :(

It's as if they are expecting me to crash at that price lol

Although if i was female it would be a third less, almost enough for a s*x-change op probably (joking)

With that sort of cost, it would probably be much cheaper to get a moped and get insurance that can allow you to transfer the no-claims from that over to the car later on when you are older and more experienced.

Unfortunately as we all know, its all about statistical odds. There's some of your peers seriously letting the side down by driving like morons!! In fairness, when I got my first car at 26(!!) though I was on my 6th year of holding a licence, in the first few weeks I drove like a nutter until I scared myself witless but its that few early days that must equally unnerve the insurance companies.

The first time driving in ice for example is one terrifying experience if you drive without thought as *some* young drivers do.

With insurance costs of £4000 on a 1.3 enginged car is it any wonder that more people just don't bother?

My first years insurance on the Aygo cost me £1500 2 years back a couple of months after i had turned 18
