Trading In 07 Rav Diesel.

I am only a matter of a week or so away from the 30,000 mile land mark, and the need to fork out for yet another service. Quite liking the look of the new IQ, I dropped in at my favourite dealer on Saturday to consider the possibility of buying an IQ for local journeys, so as to save the Rav for longer trips and its new found job of towing our 23ft. Caravan. With zero VED aprt from the initial purchase price, the only added expense would be the insurance, much of which would be recovered in the retained value of the vehicles through them both being rated as low mileage vehicles, at least in the case of the IQ, but I expect limited use of the Rav would also categorise the Rav in two years or so in this band.

HOWEVER, upon arrival at the dealership I spoke to the principal who immediately suggested I should buy a new Rav XTR. Explaining to him that I suspected the trade in value of my Rav would probably insult me he replied that I would probably be surprised. After a detailed loo0k at the car, he offered to change over the recently fitted £700 towbar, and empty my wallet of £7500 to buy a new XTR diesel. Now this did surprise me and I am thinking over the proposition. I still need to negotiate, as I am still interested in buying what would now be also a small economical older Toyota for the trips into town. Are you guys also impressed with these figures like me; as his offer represents a trade in of £13300 in real terms, which I personally consider a pretty good deal !!

Loosing £7500 to get into a 2yr newer car can't be a good idea, its not as if yours is old and worn out or the new RAV is hugely different. Buy an extended 2yr warranty that bolts onto the manufacturers and keep her then swap it at 5yrs old and get the latest RAV at that point, unless your very wealthy and money doesn't matter  ;)

I can't think of an investment that would dispatch your hard earned money much better than that does. I suppose it is all relative but I personally think that it is a waste of money. As long as my circumstances don't change I will be running mine into the ground.

£17,718 is the What Car target price for a D4D XTR and a quick look around the net seems to show that £17000 is easily achieved.

I think the part-ex for a 2 year old D4D is about £10000 which seems to add up with the £7500 the dealer is asking you to cough up.

You have said in two lines Anchs, what it would have taken me about about 20 to achieve the same, I totally agree, cannot see why John needs 2 vehicles.. double insurance.. double servicing..double road tax.. double depreciation.. And his £13300 trade in, is against a new XTR at full price, If he sold his current Rav privately(Iam not saying that would be easy) he could get £5000 discount on a new one, If i was you John i would takeout extended warranty

for peace of mind + invest in private plates £250 from DVLA if you just want a new registration

Hello

I have been quoted £700 by Toyota & £282 by Warranty Direct both for 1yr on my 3yr old RAV sad to say it has not been fault free although the main toyota dealer has been faultless with the repairs A work mate has got a Kia with a 7yr warranty Makes you think or it has made me think

Read this in Autocar a few weeks back:

"Chevrolet could join rivals Hyundai and Kia by offering longer warranties to compete with the Koreans’ five- and seven-year guarantees.

Chevrolet’s product marketing manager, Oliver Wagner, revealed: 'We have had warranties under review for about nine months. This kind of extra cover costs manufacturers money. It is a tricky decision involving balancing pluses and minuses and nothing is decided yet.'

Chevrolet three-year, 60,000-mile warranty is upstaged by Hyundai’s five-year, unlimited mileage warranty and Kia’s seven years/100,000 miles on Slovakian-built Cee’d and Sportage ranges.

Chevrolet’s executives could be influenced by 27 European Hyundai markets recently adopting the UK initiative on five years, while all European Kia importers apply the seven-year package for the two models."

Now whether GM survives for another 7 years is anyone's guess but hopefully (sooner or later) all manufactures will extend their warranties out too at least 5 years.

HI Didje you should not be paying £700 for a 1yr warranty here is A LINK to recent posts on that subject with a pricelist included by someone, What faults have you had?

A mate of mine has just taken delivery of a new KIA sorrento 4x4 168 bhp, and i really, really hate to say this but the spec + feel of quality make the Rav seem very poor in comparison.. His is the XT model listed at £22000 he paid £17000 for it, I didn't drive it but it is a lot of car for the money..

Must admit if we get a caravan this is the one that will tempt me.

Auto diesel and decent sized engine.

Not as big as the LC (or as expensive)

Didje here again the faults i have had with my 3yr 37000ml RAV are oil leak (in dealers for 3 days) and now some high pressure fuel pipe to be replaced (a modification i think) due to go to dealers on 30/3/09 length of time time expected to be in 2/3 days can you imagine the cost of this were it not under warranty I have had Toyota,s for 12yrs and no problems this is the first RAV and to say i am disappointed would be an understatement though i should add the service manager has been exceptionally helpful ( RRG Stockport) and I would recommend anyone to use them if they have a Toyota despite the present product disappointing me.

shame but there we are - 5 door oily burners are a world wide problem.

Ma 2 RAVs have a combined age of 30 years and out-perform pretty much anything else around and can tow 3 ton happily. Course ah cannae comment oan the recent RAVs, altho its pretty clear that the oily burners leave a lot to be desired on reliability.

As for dealers, after my 4 year dose of medication, I gave them up (dealers, not medication  )

Have you got any more info about that pipe?

With regard to your expectations for the RAV, I'm not defending them because we all want trouble free motors. However, this "concept" - 2.2 16V high torque Euro IV engine is all new whereas the D4D in the 4.2 had 10 years of evolution. I was certainly wary when I bought mine some 6 months into production that there may be skeletons in the cupboard and we may not have seen the worst as none of them have got very high mileage on them yet.

It is still a technological marvel by some standards and I still hear horror stories from Freelander and X-Trail owners so maybe we don't do too badly.

My daughter is still running my old 1999 Corolla which benefits from "simple" technology. So far apart from regular servicing it has had a few bulbs, a Battery and a set of plug leads in 60k. I know what you mean but we are not comparing apples with apples.

Hi Local Hero, I had test drives in both the IQ and Aygo. I think the IQ is a superb machine, packed with quality. But to buy a new one would have cost me a further £3k which I felt reluctant to do. The Aygo is a demonstrator with 4k miles so it will serve its purpose. All the best, John
