Hand Brake Shoe Replacement Procedure

Hi,

This weekend I ran into some issues when I was removing the rear brakes on my 6G Celica (GT 3S-GE, import).

The brake disc was stuck on, even though I had the handbrake off. When I finally managed to remove it, I noticed that the shoes appear very worn. But that's not the biggest problem. My problem is that there are two retaining pins that pull the shoes close to the axle side (don't want to use the word hub in case that gets confused with the drum against which the shoes brake), using a spring. I found that one side was very tight, whilst the other side was very very loose! the looseness would explain why I couldn't get it off, as it would jam against the drum on the brake disc.

What surprises me is that this seems to lock my wheel a bit when I turn it in the direction of movement. I didn't have this before.

I noticed that the retaining pin on the loose shoe was rather long, and didn't compress the spring at all, with the result that the shoe is now flopping about. Is it possible that the loose pin should be angular so it is shorter? How can I adjust these pins, and/or how should they be installed?

Also, has anyone got an illustrated procedure of how to replace hand brake shoes?

Ta!

you should of backed off the handbrake adjuster with handbrake off , this takes off any tension in the cables.
