High-pitched Whistling Noise

Recommended Posts

Posted

My N reg Carina E is making a high-pitched whistling noise. It seems to eminate from beneath the bonnet.

It had this problem when I bought it but is otherwise immaculate and drives and handles perfectly.

The noise is not present when the engine is cold. After that it is only there when I am not accelerating.

My mechanic replaced the inlet manifold gasket but it hasn't helped.

The noise is such a high frequency that some older people can't hear it. To everyone else it is quite piercing.

Any suggestions?

As the noise is not present when the engine is cold, but is there when the engine is warm sounds to me that it is a play between to parts that dissapear when the engine gets warm. Open the bonnet and listen, trying to locate where the noise is coming from. For listening on the internals of the engine use a big screwdriver between the engine and your head. When you put the screwdriver to different places on the engine you will notice that you hear different noises. Take care with the moving parts when you do this. It is not any good with looses clothing etc...

Hi I@ve just bought a p reg carina and mine is making a similar noise. I've heard it might be from the pas pump don't know if this is true or not. Can anyone help please?

If it is the power steering pump you should check the tension of the belt. If it is not ok you should tighten the belt. If the belt is ok and the noise is coming from that pump it might be the pump.

belt deflection

4A-FE & 7A-FE engine 6-8 mm

3S-FE 10-13 mm

3S-GE 13-16 mm

hi I've just put some wd40 through the long tube that comes with the can, on the pully by the pas fluid reservoir which is where the noise on my car was coming from, and this seems to have stopped the noise. You need to be carefull not to get it on the belt though. hope this helps
