Noise When Setting Off In 2.0 D-4d

Hi this is my first post - so I hope I've done it correctly. I have had a 2008 Avensis 2.0 D-4D for a couple of months and I'm concerned about a fairly quiet 'clunk' as I set off when on partial lock. The noise appears to come from the front wheels / brake disc area. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Anyone had experience of something similar? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I should add that the car has done less than 2000 miles and the noise has been there from the start.

As you've only had it a couple of months I presume it's under warranty. I would take it back in and get them to check it out for you.

Thanks for your reply Q.S. I will have it checked out - I just wondered whether anyone knew if the noise was normal.

I've had that noise on two Avensis, old model and 2007. As far as I know it is normal. It is one of ABS/TRC/VSC setting itself. If it only happens on partial lock then perhaps it is something else. Park the car ready to move off in a straight line and leave overnight. Next day, drive straight off and see if you get the same noise. In my case, I reverse a little out of my garage/drive, straighten up, drive a few yards then I get it.

That's very interesting. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely try it. My noise can occur in reverse or forwards. I notice it especially when reversing off my drive in a morning - the noise occurs just as I am half-way through turning the wheel to reverse onto the road.

I don't notice it as I set off though which is what you have found.

It is the car's self-test for the traction control system. Don't worry about it :)

Thanks Neil. I was beginning to think along those lines as it occurs when the car gets above about 2 mph. If I set off VERY slowly the noise is delayed until I it reaches 2mph. It also only occurs when the engine has been switched off.

Your help is much appreciated. Cheers.

Tried your suggestion, and you are right - it happens in a straight line too and only after the engine has just started. Thanks for your help, I'm now happy it's normal.

Hi Luthier,

I second what Neil says, I also get the same noise just as I move off after starting the engine, I actually think that there is a mention of this somewhere in the owners manual so nothing to be concerned about.
